Pickup for modern death metal... please help
« on: October 29, 2017, 08:57:23 AM »

Hi everyone. I am currently using Aftermath in my 7 string guitar  but i need changes. Im using 12-60+74 strings set and EVH amp.
Guitar specification is:
Body - swamp ash / maple top ( bolt-on)
Neck - wenge
Fretboard - snakewood
Tuning - A standard
I play mostly death metal, fast riffs and chords. Wenge neck is dark and bassy. I feel that bas have not enough clarity and highs is too shrill and ice peaky.
I tried experimenting with pickup height but without effect.
My choice is :
1. Painkiller
2. Ragnarok
3. Black Dog
What do you think ? Which one will suit the tone of this guitar?
I will be grateful for the advice and suggestions.
C-pig, Jagg, Aftermath, C-Bomb.

I'd go for ragnarok. Painkiller is pretty shrill. Maybe black dog could work, but I think ragnarok would work beter.
Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)

The bright woods could make the PK shrill.  Out of the three I think the Ragnarok would be best.

IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN
TRUE GRIT

... and Ragnarok is here. This is the best pickup I have ever had. Its  heavy clear and aggressive. Beautiful clean especially with split coil. Ragnarok has more  "lives" than Aftermath. The chords are much bigger and heavier, but at the same I hear every single note. Its amazing. I like Aftermath in mahogany but in swamp ash it's time to say goodbye  :-)

Glad to hear it worked out.

Out of the various pickups marketed to djent players the Ragnaroks are definitely the ones that sound best to my ears.

My music style is Vader, Behemoth, Nile, Gojira ....
What is this djent?   hahahahah

I played 3 years on Aftermaths and I think Ragnarok has what I lacked in AM. I still love Aftermath in mahogany but in this particular case (swamp ash / maple / snakewood) did not sound good to me and to my style of music.
No matter if Ragnarok is a Djent pickup or country pickup ... awesome work for high gain stuff and is more versatile than Aftermath in my opinion.

Beautiful axe... and your comments about the Ragnarok are killing me. I have a swamp ash 7 with Juggs I'm happy with but I want to try the raggs so much!
