Covered or uncovered C-Pig for ash body Ibanez?
« on: November 18, 2017, 08:48:25 PM »
I was going to purchase a C-pig set for my ash body Ibanez RGR, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get them covered since I hear that ash body guitars are more bright.

I don't think it matters very much, I would just go with what looks better.  You save some money without covers.

BKP compensates covered pickups in the windings, so they will more or less the same in sound. On an Ibbie I would go open coils.

They will sound the same... go with the one you think looks better.

I was told in an email from BKP that the pickup windings are identicle for covered and uncovered pickups. ie.  covered pickups are not wound brighter or hotter at the winding stage to compensate for being destined to end up covered.

Ok, I read in threads from years ago they did, but apparently not (anymore?).

A while ago when I was getting Cold Sweat bridge, I wanted to have open coil but asked if it would be possible to wind it a bit more to compensate the lack of cover (and apparently bring more lows) and I was told that they don`t do that as they wind every pickup to exact specification and to same standards either open or covered.

by the way, for Ibanez I would definitely go for open coil.

the only time I've really ever noticed the difference between covered and uncovered my self was with my 1979 Flying V. That guitar has the original Gibson T-Top humbuckers, which must be one of the lowest output humbuckers out there. Taking the covers off allowed me to get the pickups that little bit closer to the strings, and get just enough extra output to drive my Marshall as I like it.

There may have been a little difference in tone, but overwhelmingly the difference was being able to get the pickups closer to the strings.

With a high output pickup like a C-Pig you don't really care about that. So as others have said - go with whatever you think looks cool  :afro:

Thanks guys! Why do you say that for Ibanez I should go for uncovered? The only reason why I was considering getting them covered would be because it's an ash body, which I hear are brighter. Maybe i'm overthinking it :)

Why do you say that for Ibanez I should go for uncovered?

to me especially RGs look much better with open coil, open coils in my opinion suit better look-wise. Just like for example Telecaster Deluxe looks better with covers. It`s only matter of taste at the end. Whatever you find better looking for you, that`s what matters.

Thank you. I went ahead and purchased a covered white set of C-pigs since my guitar is all black. It's the new Ibanez RGR- check it out!
