Abraxas set for PRS SE Zach Myers
« on: November 29, 2017, 03:54:28 AM »
Hello all, this is my first post here. I have experience with the Mule set and think that are quite awesome. I just got a Stormy Monday set which is going to be installed into an Epiphone ES-Les Paul

I have a PRS SE Zach Myers that I am thinking of putting the Abraxas set into. I play a variety of styles depending on my mood but my live playing is usually done in the context of a modern contemporary church service. Much of the music is driven by a crunchy guitar, sometimes I will play some faster leads if the song calls for it but, it also gets into some atmospheric stuff that draws a lot of it's influence form U2 and can get into some atmospheric sounds with a lot of Delay, Reverb and little bit of overdrive ala Bethel Music and Hillsong United. Sometimes I say find myself playing something bluesy or a even Jazzy.

The tone of the guitar unplugged is very much like an acoustic guitar. The tone while not dark is definitely warm. I am looking to not add brightness to my sound but rather I want to retain the warmth, perhaps accentuate the mids just a little but detail and clarity are a must as well.

My Current set up is pretty basic. I plug into a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet Overdrive pedal, into a Strymon Timeline for Delay and those run into a Fender Blues Junior which has a Cannabis Rex speaker in it.

Would the Abraxas be a good set for what I am wanting to do or should I consider some thing else? Thank you.

Abraxas does well in PRS. Compared to a Mule-bridge the Abraxas adds more output, mids and a tad more bass, while the topend is (a little) rounder.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I've done a review of Abraxas  in a PRS... it's mentioned in a few threads so take a look around.

I think from a frequency response standpoint, they are right in the ballpark you are looking for.  However, I think they may be a little hot for the style of music you play, especially the bridge.  The neck may be good though if you are looking to mix and match.

In any event, the Abraxas frequency band lines up with what you are looking for, so if you can find something a little less hot but in that ballpark, then you should be good.  With that said, I use a Mark V and pile on the gain.  Depending on what you are using, you may find the output of the bridge perfectly fine.

Good luck!

Thank you for you reply, I will look up your review. I was thinking that if the Bridge is a little hot, I can always lower it down a little more than normal. I like doing legato lioness on the bridge pickup anyway, which was one thing that had me considering the Abraxas set. Plus Tim had sid that it would be one of the set he would recommend as an alternative set in my Epiphone. The other being the Stormy monday set, which is what I ended up getting for that guitar.
