I just looked on a site of a shop not too far from me and i've just seen the prices that Gibsons are going for now days. £1000+ for a bloody les paul studio!!  why the hell would any one pay that amount for a sub standard guitar!

I can see Tokai getting alot more popular in the next few months.

For a studio? You could buy my guitar, your choice of BKs and a two year supply of strings for that. Gibson really are ripping people off these days, aren't they?

Yeah just a bit. They're going to push too far and end up with no sales sooner than later.

ive noticed an increase in other gibbo's as well... for example, i got my les paul melody maker for £350 second hand, when you could buy em brand new for £400-500 in most places... nowadays they're fetching £500-600 brand new and no cheaper.. (not that ive seen anyway)

weird..

i still love my melody maker though... and im happy with the price i got it for, its actually turned out to be a bit of an investment lol... i reckon with the bare knuckle installed i could sell it for £500 easy and make a profit...

The thing is though people still pay it, because they feel they need the name on the headstock, so they know these idiots will still buy them.. I'm guessing. My mate bought a Gibson LP studio a while back and it was definately not worth the money, I paid less for my BK'd epi which wipes the floor with the stock Gibson  :D

yer exactly- and because more and more people are starting to learn guitar- (more guitar based bands in pop music- arctic monkeys e.t.c e.t.c) more people are buying guitars, and there are more people looking to buy guitars which dont know enough about them... that = more people thinking gibson= excellent....

Maybe Gibson need the money because they're thinking of starting a Quality Control department.

You can get an LP studio for under £750 from any of the big mail order places. Prices do seem to have gone up a little in the past few months, but the pound hasn't been so good against the dollar as it was.

I'm told by a mate who owns a shop selling Gibsons that the trade prices are going up radically, though how this will affect the street price is anyone's guess.

I think Gibson are capable of making a good guitar, it's just that it doesn't always happen. I played a Les Paul Historic Reissue last year and I was shocked at how bad it was: sharp fret ends, shoddy binding on the neck, and the humbucker rings weren't flush with the body because they were chipped and dented beyond repair. The price? £2700.

To anyone who has to have a Gibson, I'd recommend checking it out very thoroughly first. I wouldn't mail order one under any circumstances.

Personally, I'll never buy a new Gibbo - the quality issues and the vile PRS lawsuit have seen to that. The Gordon Smiths look like very good, cheap alternatives, and if you're hankering after an expensive maple-top Les Paul, why not get a top British luthier to custom build you the guitar of your dreams?

There are probably a few factors involved here...

1. The exchange rate has shifted a bit making USA made guitars more expensive
2. the price of mahogany has shot up too as it becomes more scarce
(probably because Mcdonalds has had all the trees chopped down and burnt to make way for grazing cheap cattle for your death-burger)

3. Increses in US fuel prices which just makes everything more expensive
I know that their prices are a lot behind ours for petrol but it always seems to have a noticable affect on cost of manufacturing
