Pickups for a Sambora MIM Strat
« on: January 29, 2018, 12:00:18 PM »
I recently upgraded my Eclipse from EMGs to a Black Dog set and love the tone and output
Now I need to get my other guitars up to the same standard
I am looking at a HSS set and wondering if anyone has suggestions?
I'm wondering how the black dog will go in the Alder bodied strat vs the Mahogany with maple top of the Eclipse.
After this I have my EC1000 to change from EMGs from too, but that is a detuned guitar, but that's another thread

Holy diver is a popular choice for alder body super strats. I have it in mahogany super strat and it's awesome.

Can you provide a little more information on the types of tones you are looking for? Capac is right that a Holy Diver sounds great in a Strat, and it is versatile considering how hot it is. It splits well. It has enough bottom end to fatten up a Strat, but it still cuts. The Crawler is another good choice. It is more vintage in flavor than the Holy Diver. It is lower output and smooths out the top end. If you want to nail Sambora, a Mule might be the choice since he uses low output pickups.

Hey
I play metal and rock, Looking for an Alice in chains sound, but play Motley cue, system of a down, hope that gives an idea
I play a lot of open chords rather than power chords
I am definitely looking for a "cleanish" distortion sound rather than a really distorted sound
Hope that helps

Definitely Holy Diver. It nails Alice In Chains and Motley Crue and is probably the best BKP for a mix of rock and metal in a Super Strat.

It's crazy versatile. It also a lot tighter and aggressive (when you need it to be) than most people think.

Totally agree. It really is versatile. It splits well and thus can do clean sounds well especially for such a high output pickup. It lives in the ‘80s metal sounds but it is so much more than that. It can do everything from amped up classic rock to modern metal. It’s like a better JB. I like the bottom end it adds which helps fatten up a Strat just right, but even with the bottom end it is still tight.
