Ragnarok in ash body also comparison
« on: February 13, 2018, 09:28:37 AM »
Hey,

So I'm looking into pickups, and tossing up getting some ragnaroks because of their dirty sound, but also their versatility.
I'm curious how they sound in an ash body guitar though, as it sounded like it wasn't recommended.

The other question is how would it compare to a warpig/ juggarnaut (or nailbomb or something) combo.

Guitar is a 7string explorer kit.
ash body
Maple neck, maple fretboard
Tune-o-matic bridge
Quick swap vol pot (seymour duncan liberator), and push/push tone pot.

Main kinda sounds go from like triviumy kinda sounds to dream theatre, to nice bitey cleans to play basically whatever (dream theatre cleans is probably a good example).
Had previously used emgs for it all, and quite liked them, but currently looking into a variety of different pickups for different guitars, and thought these would be awesome in the 7 string

Hey there, I can certainly back your Ragnarok idea - all guitars I've played with that have the explorer shape tend to have a substantial increase in low end, which I'd worry would not work all that well with the Warpig/Juggernaut designs that have more low end extension and therefore come out overly muddy/bassy in your guitar. The Ragnaroks have a great mid snarl and a lean low end that will be closer to what you're experiencing with your EMGs, yet with the more open and less "boxed-in" advantages of passives. The split coil sounds are also excellent, and should deliver great DT-esque cleans if that's what you're after.

Cheers!

I don't play metal but I must say that I quite like the crunch and the snarl of the Ragnarok. Would that be a nice pickup for bluesrock too?

I'd avoid it for blues rock personally. It's more compressed and in my experience, none of the pickups with ceramics I've tried did the best job for this application.
Aftermath (bridge), alnico Black hawk (set), holydiver (set)

Yeah I guessed so. I stick to my Mules.
