HardCore/Crossover BKP's for Gibson SG Standard?
« on: April 27, 2018, 01:32:34 PM »
Hi Everybody...I know is an very typical question (I used the "search" a lot to find answers to this question already) but I wat to specify this topic to this music genre exactly and not "Metal"in general.

I have an Gibson SG Standard from 2016, with the 490R/498T from stock and I want to replace, I like the 490 in the neck but I miss some "Body" on the 498T in the bridge.

-My style with the band is middle's 80's and the 90's Hardcore/Crossover like: S.O.D,Cro-Mags, Ratos de Porao,  D.R.I, Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, Madball...
-My amps are a JCM800 Boosted with a Manon OD808 and a Peavey 6505+
-We play in D standard Tuning

What BKP's set can you recommend? Im thinking in MM or Nailbomb with the ceramic option for the bridge. But I will I would appreciate some advice from the experts of this forum.

These are the sounds I love and want to get with the BKP's:

I would suggest a ceramic Nailbomb or Painkiller for this style

I know R.D.P.'s sound well ... I have a big tattoo of their mascot on my right elbow ...

I think the C-Bomb is probably your safest bet.  I've used the A-Bomb in my 2011 SG Standard and it was just a bit too bright and aggressive in the mids.  The PK might have the same problem.  Stick with the standard wiring harness at first.  If you think the guitar could be a brighter after the pickups are installed then a new harness is an easy change.  But I went back to a stock (wired) harness in my SG Standard as every pickup set I tried with the custom '50s wired harness was too bright.

My amp is a 6534+ and I used to play in a d-beat band (I used a Stockholm-equipped SG Junior in D standard for that though).

Nailbombs have typically been a pickup that people avoid in SGs, with the general wisdom that it's best to stick to either the vintage output or extreme high output ranges - the SGs tend to have quite spiky upper mids that can be exacerbated unpleasantly by the average mid-output pickup's resonant peak.

With that in mind, I'd recommend going all the way up to the Ceramic Warpig - it's got the "body" you're after with loads of aggression without being shrill.

The Miracle Man bridge does work well in my SG Standard.  Like I said though the guitar is pretty bright so I went back to the stock 300K volume pots

The Miracle Man is nowhere near as scooped in an SG as it apparently is in other guitars.  The mid hump of the SG balances it out nicely.  I'm not sure that the MM is aggressive enough though.

I should have mentioned that I also have an SG Special Faded with the alnico Warpig set that worked very well in D standard for hardcore punk like R.D.P., Mob 47, Discharge, that kind of stuff.  The brighter 500K pots work well with the A-Pig

Really thank you for your answers, they are very helpful for me because I can not test them for myself and the only way I have to listen to them is through Youtube videos.
I forgot to mention that the pots of my SG are 500K (they are the factory pots).

It's not going to be an easy task to decide ... but your answers are truly appreciated. I think that at the moment I am between the set of Nailbomb (Ceramic in the Bridge) or the set of Warpig ..

No worries! I'd say the practical difference there is how fat you want the low end to be - with the Warpig having more low end beef than the Nailbomb.
