Impulse/Black Hawks compared to Juggernaut
« on: May 04, 2018, 08:04:54 PM »
Hi folks!

I'm considering swapping out the Juggernaut set I have in my Skervesen Raptor 7 string and was looking for some advice on my options.

The Juggernauts suit me a lot more than the Nailbomb set that was originally in there (the low end wasn't tight enough, but they were also weirdly thin sounding), but I've been noticing something up with the mid range that I'm not quite happy with. I find I need to make some eq cuts at around 250 Hz and 700 Hz, otherwise there is this "woofy" sound mushing things up. I have an Ibanez SZ with Alpha/Omega pickups in it and find I don't need to make these cuts to keep things clear, so I'm thinking of trying something different in the 7.

I'm pretty curious about the Impulses: the descriptions I've heard suggest it's a very even pickup, without any real "spikes" which sounds great to me, but there are very few people taking about or demoing them.

I've also been tempted to try the Black Hawks (either ceramic or alnico) in something for a while now. They do seem to be more full on and aggressive than the others though, which does make me a little worried about the clarity in this case.

So can anybody give me a run down on these 3 (4 if the A Hawks count) pickups? How they compare overall and if you thing they might be more up my alley than the Juggernauts?

The guitar is a bolt-on maple necked 7 string, 25.5 inch scale with a limba body, tuned usually in drop A or drop G#.

I'm having the A-Hawk set fitted to my mahogany body (thin lacewood top) maple bolt-on neck Schecter Stiletto-6 FR over the next couple of weeks, so I will be able to report back then.

I suspect that you might be happier with the Impulses if you don't need something too aggressive, otherwise the A-Hawk might suit you.  From what I can tell the C-Hawk is more bitey in the top end.

There are some videos of the Skervesen Raptor 6 with Nailbombs and Black Hawks but the videos aren't very good, the noise of the pick and strings seems to be drowning out the guitar because the amp is set too low.  Also he doesn't say which magnet they have.

There is a video comparing an A-Hawk with a Jugg in Mayones 6 strings:

The same guy did a demo of the C-Hawk in a 7 string:

Personally I think this is the best video of the A-Hawk on the tube:

There's a few good videos of the Impulses, but I like these two:

From what I can tell the A-Hawk is a bit of a middle ground between the Juggernaut and the Impulse, but with more balls down low.
