Pickup Selection Help
« on: April 16, 2006, 01:37:01 AM »
yo, i plan to get an ibanez rg1570mrb soon, and its going to be set up with 9s and tuned to e. this is because i will be using it to learn and practice ''shred''.

i dont think the pickups that come with this guitar are very good so as soon as i get it, im going to swap them. so, i came here because i need help choosing which pickups to get, i was thinking of emgs, but i dont think theyre great for shred, well theyre ok, but im sure theres better. they seem a bit too hot for me.

so what neck pickup would be suitable for clean and fluid sweeps (i use my neck pup for sweeps) and for fast runs?

and what bridge pickup would be suitable for heavy and tight distortion whilst still being suitable for shred like runs and licks?

as you may be able to tell, im into metal and shred :p

i hope you can help me out

cheers

I haven't received my BKP set yet so take this with a grain of salt.  I have however listened to almost every clip in the Players section.  Sounds to me like you may want a calibrated set of Miracle Man pickups or maybe MM bridge and Nailbomb neck?  People with more knowledge than myself are sure to pipe up shortly.

Like spleen, I haven't tried any BK's either, so if any of the knowledgeable BKP guys turn up (tim, steve Mr pig 2 u, Twilight Odyssey, Phil King, HJM, MDV and many others) listen to them over me, lol.

From what I hear, the cold sweat neck pickup is great for shred in the neck. It's alnico V (despite it saying ceramic on this site), since BKP don't do ceramic neck pickups.

For the bridge, the MM is supposed to be great for shred.

Also, I've heard tim and HJM say that Nailbombs do very well in RG's, they suit the tone of the basswood very well.

Also, calibrated sets are meant to be better than mixing and matching, unless you know exactly what you're after and run it by Tim first.

For the middle, I'd assume you want the trilogy suite, since it's based on malmsteen, but again, I may be wrong.

So yeah, those are some thoughts, but if any of the main BKP guys disagree with me, go with what they say. And if no-one answers, just send BKP an email!

Cheers, and welcome to the forum!

:D Yep Tim & the boys tend to recommend Nailbombs for Basswood bodied guitars. They have a great sound to`em check out clips in the players section. A calibrated set will do `ya just fine.

The ultimate neck for fluid sweep and articulate picking is the Cold Sweat neck model.............for a bridge, either a Nailbomb for classic shred tone or a Miralce Man for even more power and a great front to the note!

I've just had a Trilogy fitted in the middle position of my RG570 to replace a Dimarzio Fast Track that wilted under the competition from my bridge/neck BKPs.

As always, I trusted Tim's advice and the splits in positions 4/2 are wonderful.
