Pickup Height?

How close should i have my miracle man to the strings (pressed down at 22nd fret), with the mm in the bridge?

I want the most output so obviously i want it close but i dont want any nasty over tones how close u think?

previous to this i had it a good 5mm away, i've moved it closer to about 2mm and the tone is smoking!? just not sure if thats too close and i might be losing some tone?

also any ideas for the neck?

:D The general consensus is to use your ears. Select a clean sound on your amp then strum some chords & make adjustments as needed. It sounds to me like you`ve got it about right as you discribe your sound as "Smoking"  :P

I have my VHII  & Mules set high at the bridge as well. They both sound good to me !!!

As for the neck Both my Mules & VHII are set low. If you look at the P/U in the body it`s slightly higher by about 2mm above the Pickup ring.

God I could do with a Gin & Tonic !

what the advantages of having your pickup close or further away from the strings?

The further the pickup is from the strings, the less effect the magnetic pull will have on them. You will get more of your guitar's acoustic tone. The output will be diminished, however, as the pickups will be far away from the source of your sound: the string. When the pickup is closer, output is increased, but so is the magnet's pull on the string.

isn't the sustain higher if further away?

or is that just something crazy that i've heard?

I've found that the string sustains more with the pickup being higher.

EDIT: The closer the pickups are to your strings the less it sustains. The magnets will have a strong pull on the strings, pretty much grabbing the strings harder so they don't move as long. But the closer they are, the louder the sound is. So I would find the loudest point before it starts to kill your sustain. The more powerfull the magnet the further it must be set away. My EMG's can be right up next to them because EMG's have very very weak magnets. Warpigs and MM's have very very strong magnets.
