5150 Or Cake Or Death
« on: April 19, 2006, 01:26:13 PM »
I'm about to choose the 5150.

For the last year I have been very happy with my POD. It is doing the job, it's versatille, it sounds great, it makes studio work very, very easy. But the time has come to make a big purchase and buy something that I don't really "need", but something that I have WANTED for ages, a Peavey 5150.

Everyone I know who owns a 5150 has never looked back, and won't stop going on about it. Obviously I have had a bash on one and I simply love the brutality of it. I have yet to get my Warpig through one, but I simply can't wait to!

My mind is practically made up. Any thoughts anyone?

Ooooo. It's just that when spending that sort of cash on a head, it's got to be right. Is no one going to talk me out of this?

Ah...I had a feeling that the Engl would appear! Who has used an Engl? It'd be good to hear it in context, so are there any tracks anyone could recommend so I can get an idea? Thanks for that link Chrisola. HOW MUCH??£££???

We've just had a whole thread dissing the 5150/6505. What do you play and what are you looking for?
I really love my Ashdown Fallen Angel. All the power, gain and bass you could ever want, yet also a VERY nice clean sound and some pretty convincing plexi type tones as well.

I know that the Ashdown Fallen angel drive channel was, let's say, heavily inspired by the 5150...

Steve Stevens makes them sound cool, I'd get a mark 1 though.

I own an ENGL Screamer 50 and have gigged with and rehersed and jammed on 5150's and an ENGL Powerball.

I prefer the ridiculous ammounts of gain the 5150 produces and the juicy responce to your playing they really do kick some serious ass, the ENGL's have a much tighter sound tracks a lot more and they're absolute bar-stewards for showing up every mistake in your playing they're so detailed in sound.

Depends what your after really I prefer the feel of the 5150's to be fair but the ENGLs make me a better player.

Yeah I was after a Mark 1. I play anything from Black Metal to Hard Rock to Thrash, mainly with a Warlock and it's beautiful warpig. I think you've all convinced me. I get the feeling that the Engl is just a little anal for my needs.

Thanks for your help though! Now I just have to find a 5150 Mark 1 for less than £600.00!

I vastly prefer an engl to a 5150, but that's just me. I own a savage se, by the way.

But yeah, for the tones you're after, a peavey or a mesa (or ashdown, as hayden suggested) is probably what you're after, not an engl. EDIT: actually, do you prefer a dark or bright tone? dark = peavey 5150/mesa, bright = engl.

I've used a 5150 for probably 10 years now as my main amp, never had a problem cooking killer metal tones,
for a real beauty metal rythm tone use the clean channel in crunch mode with a TS or similar to scare up some harmonics and burn,\m/

Axe with a straight Warpig into the lead channel is truly wonderful too.
