Pickups for Steinberger Metal Monster
« on: November 19, 2018, 09:34:31 PM »
I made a Steinberger style guitar. Solid Mahogany body. H/H configuration.  A Moses Graphite neck.
I play modern metal. and wanted suggestions on something that is good in Mahogany, lots of mid-range, tight and bright. good harmonics.
This guitar has a twin brother that is already built. He has had "Dimarzio Titans"  Did not like them at all, dull, boring and hard as hell to get pinch harmonics out of em.
Seymour Duncan Alpha/Omega, those were better but kind of thin. nice attack, nice clarity, but not very thick. they lacked balz scooped mids, practically no mids.
Let me know some suggestions.  both are mahogany, if the evil twin comes out nice, then i may change pickups in his evil twin as well.

Long ago, i had tried an Aftermath and did not  like it.  It seemed to amplify string talk more than my actual notes.  may have been partly my technique but the duncans did not do that.  Aftermath for me was a no go.

My initial thought was the Miracle Man but then you said you've been having problems with scooped mids.

Out of the pickup sets I have I would suggest the alnico Black Hawk.  It's plenty thick, has great mids (without being honky) and the top end is slightly rolled off compared to the ceramic version.  I have it in a mahogany body bolt-on maple neck Schecter with a Gotoh trem (brass block).  It has the trademark BKP clarity but I'd say that the sound is more compressed in character than many of the other BKPs I have, more like a Duncan in that respect.

Damn, i cant decide.
I guess from what i have listened to,
I like the Ceramic Blackhawk "reminds me of an EMG81 with 18volt mod. "
I Like the Holy Diver "warm and articulate"
I like the Painkiller "Not as warm as the diver, i tad brighter but still articulate"

Wonder which would be best in mahogany.  I  usually prefer Alnico in Alder guitars, but these Mahogany ones, my concern is not enough clarity.
I emailed BKP and was suggested Holy Diver set.
