noob needs page tone
« on: April 20, 2006, 07:10:26 PM »
sorry if this has already been done but i cant find a relevant post. Im looking for Page tone and im thinking of getting a LP copy and getting a black dog for the bridge.
1) If this is the same as another post, sorry and could someone tell me what page it is on or give me a link
2) what would be the best guitar for this, budget at £500
3) I'd Like to be able to keep my Fender champion 300 amp, and use a pedal to get the right type of distort/fuzz/overdrive (don't know the difference)... my big muff isn't quite right. If i do need a pedal, which one should i get? or do i need a brand new amp?

Great choice! That pickup is scary good & is total Jimmy Page!

I would look at EDWARDS guitars, which are made by ESP.

I would get the guitar and pickups sorted, and then see what you need as far as pedals go.

where are you from? if you're in england check gordon smiths out. Great british hand made custom quality Les Pauls, and you can get it made with the black dog already in it. 8)
LOVING the Mules!

If you have £500 in addition to the black dog, I'd fit the black dog to your current guitar (as long as it doesn't totally suck, lol), and put the £500 towards a second hand (older) valve marshall amp or equivalent. EDIT: assuming you can crank the amp, lol.

The Barber Direct Drive pedal is often called "a Marshall in a box", and does a very creditable job of it:

Sound samples here:

In Britain you can only buy them from Strings Direct:

Not cheap at £100, but I reckon this would be a very good way to get convincing Page tones out of your existing amp.

gordon smith looks fantastic :D but a bit over budget :( is it worth saving a bit longer for one? they say on their site that "Gordon-Smith Guitars are to England as Gibson is to the USA." but im hoping that they don't mean "Overpriced brand junk, you pay £1200, we give you a guitar we've just shiteted out!" I've looked for edwards guitars but nothing from google or the esp site... could you get me a link to a site? Direct Drive looks good but i'll think i'll get the guitar and see how it sounds out before splashing out even more!

Try googling katana guitars for edwards. There a bit rare over here but they do a fantastic job for the money.

Also, Tokai make fantastic Les Paul copies as well. And if you look around long enough you're sure to find one in budget. They pop up all over e-bay, and there's several places that stock them too, the Japanese ones are the best, but the Korean ones are no slouches either.

Check my post on Epiphone Les Paul with BDs and a Page approach.

With lower priced guitars you just have to be more attentive and selective to catch a good one, then it can still be fun with cheapo manufacturing...
