Good guitar to modify

Eventualy, I'm going to get to the point that I need a nice evil looking guitar that I can fit some nice evil sounding warpigs and tune it to the nice evil drop c.

I really like the ESP Eclipse Vintage Blacks. There is a LTD version too, I love the matt black finish and gold binding. The LTD version is also cheaper and has 24 frets, which I like, but is has EMG's. EMGS are nice pickups, I don't really want to have a pair sitting around. I'd rather find a guitar that has the look and feel that I want but has some cheap pickups that I don't mind tossing. Ibanez for example, great bodies and necks but the lower/mid range models have weak pickups, but Ibanez doesn't have the body I want.

I need something thick, hardtail, mahogany, like the EC-1000VB. I have a EC-1000 with the See-through black cherry and its a great guitar. It feels so nice, it's insane that it cost less than $700.


Does anyone know of a manufacturer that has the type of guitar body I want (EC/les paul like, black, 24 frets thick neck would be nice) and passive pickups? Is it hard to convert an active guitar to running with passive pickups?

dunno mate, first thing that sprung to mind was ESP... but then i read you had one already, and are looking at one... cant think of any others... but then my knowledge of axes is pretty cr@p.

but yer, ESPs definately do seem to fit the bill... from your description/requirements... then they seem like the obvious choice, and like you say, you have one and love it... so why not just get another similar one (like the EC1000VB you mentioned) and mod it?.... sounds like a good plan to me...

Actually, thinking 'evil guitar', BC Rich Warlock Mick 7 signature with the big 'HATE' inlay. Put some Warpigs in there and you'll have the most evil guitar in the world.

It will scare women and children and some grown men. Your dog will run away from you with it's tail between it's legs as soon as you take the guitar out of the case.

I've been considering an ESP Eclipse for the same things, Piggys! You can get them with SD's which are cheaper than the EMG loaded ones, then just ebay them.

One thing that just caught my eye is a PRS Tremonti SE. They are around £340 here and they have a 25" scale length which is ideal for drop tunings. Mahogony too. With a good set up and maybe upgraded pots too, i reckon it could be ok. I'm still thinking about getting one. The thing is I've changed my mind so many times! Too much gas going on here.

Very chunky neck on the SEs - I don't like them, but lots of people do.  Make sure you try before you buy...

Ibanez SZ maybe? Feels alot like a perfect morph between a PRS and a les paul....really a great feel....thick, but not too thick....very nice sound, only problem is that pups could use a swap.

Mmm...The SZ520 is amazing.

Also, this yamaha looks very similar, but is a bit cheaper, check it out

+1 on Ibanez SZ, it sounds perfect for your needs, other than that you said you don't like ibanez style bodies yu vain bar-steward. It'd rock your c--k with warpigs! 8)  :twisted:

Yeah, I want a dark colored guitar, like the EC-100VB, but it has active pickups, how hard would it be to change from active to passive?

Not hard, as far as I know you just need some new pots & caps, and passive pickups of course
