Charvel DK24 - Pickup ideas
« on: March 14, 2019, 09:33:10 PM »
First time back in a while...

I have a Charvel DK24 (HH, FR) coming in tomorrow - alder body, maple neck and board, floyd rose. I'm not a fan of the stock pickups, especially the bridge pickup, at all - the Full Shred has this c--ked wah weirdness, and the jazz is just OK (and let's be honest, white on satin black is just a bad look, lol).

I'm going to tune this guitar to C# standard and I play death metal along the lines of Dyscarnate, Revocation, etc with a Dual Rectifier.

I'm looking for:
Bridge:
- fat, grindy midrange
- fast tracking but still substantial low end
- top end without a lot of "hair" but still articulate

Neck:
- not too warm
- kinda throaty
- a good amount of pick attack + bite
I'm thinking a Ragnarok might be the way to go for the bridge and maybe a Cold Sweat for the neck, but my friend Nick (a BKP dealer) swears by Holy Divers for this. Thoughts?

I would inspect the Juggernaut (too).
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Regarding neck pickup I would rather go VHII neck than Cold Sweat. Cold Sweat from my experience doesn`t fit your description, but... I have in dark sounding LP style guitar, might behave differently in yours. From what other people say about Holydiver neck it`s brighter but more vintage sounding. I would suggest to take a look at VHII neck, it does have nice pick attack, little bit of 'single cil' bite and it`s not too warm either (Miracle Man nack is warmer for example)
Dean Cadillac - Emerald (b), Cold Sweat (n),
Mayones Flame CS2000 - Miracle Man (b), Sinner (m), Aftermath (n)
Warmoth Custom Telecaster - Cold Sweat (b) VHII (n)
Warmoth Custom Tele - Miracle Man set

I can speak for the Holy Diver bridge, and I would think it is too loose and vintagey for the kind of music and sound goals you are listing. I love that pickup by the way.
