I am getting an LTD M-400 or MH-400 soon, and I hate active EMGs. I am going to want to change them to the Miracle Man set. First of all, how hard is it to go from active to passive pickups, and how much different is the Miracle Man sound from the EMG 81 sound? Be specific too.

Its very easy to change them, but not to mix them. You need different pots. You have 25k pots with the EMGs and you'll need at least 250 (will work, thats all, normally a single coil pot), far more likely 500k for the BKs.

The MM is bassier, less middy similar teble, but its higher sounding, sharper, its lower gain, less compressed, more articualte and defined than an 81.

Another question. I am going to want to go from the EMG 81s with a 3-way switch to a coil split 5 way switch with Miracle Man. Can this be done, and will the cleans on the coil-split mode be good or better than the 81s?

You'd probably be needing to buy a new, five way switch from a place like Allparts or something. And, yes, I would bet heavily that the MM has better cleans than an 81...just not the best. The neck clean is supposedly excellent, though!

Well you cant split an 81, so I suppose they're better by default ;)

To answer what you meant to say: the MM cleans are quite passable, actually. Particularly for a ceramic and much much better than the 81s. I dont know what it sounds like split, I've havent split mine.

I am just looking for decent. My Randall head has a great clean sound and a great stereo chorus... and when I run my coil split Ibanez through it (pickups on that are medium-high output), it sounds amazing. As long as I have something crisp but not twangy, and nice and full, it'll be fine. I found the coil split to be highly effective in acheiving that.

I've always had great split tones from my MM, nice cut and very clear.
