Which of these three pickups?
« on: September 17, 2019, 04:57:38 PM »
Howdo all,

I’ve got a PRS style guitar (mahogany body, rosewood fretboard) that I’m going to tune to e flat/d flat.

I was just wondering which of these three pickups would be best for post hardcore/hard rock but still maintain clarity, influences are Funeral for A Friend, Thrice.

Seymour Duncan distortion
DiMarzio crunch lab
Bareknuckle Holy Diver

I’m not overly worried about cleans, I just want the pickup to sound beastly.

I play through a Blackstar HT5-R.

Many thanks,
Dan

Bare Knuckle Nailbomb Alnico 5 might be better than the Holy Diver
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

Sorry I should have said these are the pickups I’ve bought, so
It’s only out of those three.

You bought these three pickups for one guitar while playing through this amp? Mate, sell them and try to buy a real amp. I had that one and when I sold it and got a 5150 I realized I hadn't had an amp until then. I still own a "metal" version of that amp at my parent's and when I go there from time to time and use the Blackstar I have a meh time playing the guitar until I get back home to my glorious evh (I also have a ironball which is awesome too)

Yeah exactly, not much point spending all that dough on pickups when you've got a fartbox for an amp.

It’s not really a fart box, an average rating of 5 stars on google would attest to that. Thanks for the advice anyway.

What are your other amps or what did you ever tried? Decent is a bit too much of a description imho

Seriously though, if you've already bought the three different pickups give each of the them a try.  It will only cost you some strings and a bit of soldering.  Maybe some burnt fingers.  I always burn my fingers.

I have had Elmwood Modena, Bonneville, Mesa Rectoverb, Mesa Nomad, Victory V30 and 2 different Cornford MK50, Axe Fx, and tried a lot more. I had a Blackstar HT5-R stack too for home practicing, not great cleans, decent overdrives.

If I wasn't going to play outside of my bedroom and have neighbours, I would save to get an used AxeFx or Kemper with a decent studio monitors before spending that kind of money in guitar pickups.
Abraxas B- Mule N; Rebel Yell B- Emerald N; Piledriver Set; VHII set

So I’ve got the holydiver in at the moment, I’m disappointed really. It’s not giving me that huge sound I was hoping for! Anyone got any other suggestions before I sell my guitar?!

set the pickup as high as possible without touching the strings (while holding the last frets) and get a decent boost pedal

I’ve raised the pole pieces if that’s what you mean?
