Marshall tone in small tube amp
« on: April 26, 2006, 08:15:15 PM »
Im looking for a small tube amp that i can use in my bedroom, want that marshall tone. Also needs to be loud enough to play school-hall gigs but not deafening. I'm looking for page tones, but also hendrix, but I'm not really into metal. Doesn't need loads of built in effects either, im happy to use pedals.

If your good with a soldering iron why not have a go at building one of the 18Watt Plexi kits from here :-

The 2w Matamp Minimat is about £250 I think and should be ok to use live, depending on speaker cabinet and if miked through the PA etc :)

liking the matamp, but any Ideas for a cheap cab for it? I've been looking at the marshall 1912/1922/1936 but would they be too loud?

The Minimat doesn't really sound like a Marshall. It has its own distinctive overdrive characteristics which are absolutely gorgeous, but not really Marshall-esque.

Put a Barber Direct Drive in front of it and it's a different matter ...

I'm also not sure you'd get enough volume for school hall use, but that might depend on the cab and speaker efficiency.

they sound pretty good, but I'm not sure how much they are ( if you can get 'em in the UK).

The cab doesn't really affect the volume as such.  You can get a "bigger" sound with more speakers, as opposed to having just one small speaker, but it's not really louder.

On the other hand, I can't see a 2 watt amp being loud enough for anything other than bedroom playing unless it's miked.
