Replacement Pickups for Charvel So Cal
« on: February 26, 2020, 03:31:32 AM »
Hey Guys,

I've recently picked up a Charvel So Cal fitted with Seymour Duncan Distortions. Love the guitar but can't bond with the pickups--they sound too bright, harsh and cold when played through my Zinky Blue Velvet 50 watt (which is a brightish amp).

I'm looking for something warmer and more vintage/hot than can be coil split for blues. I'm playing Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Ratt, KISS, Judas Priest, Danzig, and Motorhead on the heavier end, and Cream, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, on the lighter side. Good clean blues tones would be a bonus too.

My other guitar is an Edwards Les Paul with Seymour Duncan Antiquity humbuckers. It sounds amazing through my amp, either with the amp gain or using my rat pedal.

From my research I think the Crawler set would work well, what do you guys think?

Regards,
David

The Crawler has definitely PAF-pedigree and sounds more vintage than modern. It performs very well in bolt on alder/ash guitars. The bass might a be a tad soft for metal, but it's tight enough for me and it does the classic and hardrock thing quite good. Mine is in a swampash, maple neck, ebony fretboard HSS-strat. It's chewy, growly and thick, without being too round in the upper register. Cleans are happening, especially if you play with the volumeknob. I like the split too. It's close to a telly bridge single coil.

For the neck you could choose a Mule too.

Holy Diver for me, but the Crawler should work, or even a True Grit
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

The Crawler has a softer low end when you open it up-full for the styles mentioned,
