Home PC Recording & Practice Options?
« on: April 28, 2006, 12:29:25 AM »
Hi, I'm a bit miffed at the mo, I spent a fair bit of dosh recently trying to get what i want and it seems its all going wrong.

I bought some Sennheiser RS120 Wiresless headphones to plug into back of my AVT-100 and practice with - bottom line they are cr@p, the whole wireless FM transmitter thing works fine with stereo/TV absolute rubbish with guitar amp.

I also recently bought several adapters to plug guitar into PC thru the Line out of Avt into Soundcard. Basically my Soundcard doesn't want to play ball. So my only option is to use AVT on loudspeaker and record with my PC mic, its a decent £30 mic but i cant set the mic volume low enough and the amp is too loud.

BASICALLY, all i want is to be able to practice and record with my pc, preferably with the ability to listen through headphones.

So having tried all the above can i have an answer once and for all what is best for this.

Since my soundcard doesn't want to work a USB interface would be best.

Maybe a Line 6 POD, any other similar tools? I never looked into this before.

How easy is it to record with POD, I have Magix Music Maker 10. Also can you simply plug any old headphones into my speaker socket and listen to my guitar through them?

Sorry for long post I am a bit frustrated.

I would say: look at the Line 6 Guitar Port or M-Audio Black Box.

Im sure this happens to everybody! at least my family anyway. I bought a couple of audio interfaces and had to return them because they weren't what i needed   . Same happened with my auntie, except she bought one pice of equipment, only to find she needed other bits of equipment to run in parallel with it. Its frsutrating, but once you have your setup its worth it.

Anyways, im not hot on headphones myself, but i have a firewire interface by m-audio (M-audio firewire solo) and its been great for me. As for mic, ive got a shure sm-57. These are great for the money and a "staple" mic in a way. A great all rounder and everybody has them lol. Great for recording demos and such, and ive recorded a couple of tracks at good quality which im proud of. The good thing about the firewire solo is it has a mic port and a guitar line-in.  So if you do go down the line and purchase one of these, you can either mic or go straight to line-in depending on your preferences. For line in i would get a POD though for versatility etc.

As i said before im not sure about the headphones thing. I myself dont like line-in as i get latency from my interface so i hear the notes a good half a second after ive played them on guitar. So im not sure how to go about recording with headphones without latency and such. Im sure others on the board will be able to answer this though.

Hope i've helped!

Well I've taken a good look at this and I think ill end up getting it,

Line 6 GuitarPort RiffTracker

It seems to do all the things I want it to, and i have a decent spec PC so latency shouldn't be too bad. Who knows maybe I'll have to buy a new soundcard in the end.

Just a question about Line 6 Guitarport/PODs:
How much of a roll do the actual guitar and it's pickups play, as it seems to have heavy emphasis on the digital amps which is fine but my question is are they overpowering? Will you be able to tell when a recording has been made with a Squire as opposed to a Deluxe USA Strat.

Them guitars are just an example, I basically want to know if my stock pups will sound a lot different from my new BKs? or will the digital amps with the Line 6 software dim the effect of the superior pickups?
