Matamp XV
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:48:04 AM »
aye, so i've been thinking about getting a Matamp XV and a 2x12" cab. i've heard great things about the amp already, but i was wondering how it'd sound with various BKs?

at the moment i've got an ( alder body ) Epi SG with a Mule at the neck ( A-iv ) and a Black Dog bridge ( A-v ).

next guitar will hopefully be a proper Gibson SG, with a Nailbomb neck and Warpig bridge.

basically, i was wondering what sort of tone that'd get me. would the high output pups would be neccessary if it's a 'super-gain' job?

i need a good range of heaviness, from bluesy crunch-right up to metal, but i don't need anything super extreme. although it may come in usefull, you never know  8)

if you want that range of tones, you might be better with less metal pickups, and an overdrive pedal for when you need more gain...

depends how much metal you play, of course...

I do most of teh R&D with Matamp using VHIIs, and I pick hard.....

Responds well to different pickup outputs but I personally like to use a lower gained pickup and hit the amp with a boost pedal if needed as dave_mc said.

interesting. the lower output pups and a Rangemaster-type treble booster was my other option, that might be better then. cheers guys

^how much metal are you liable to be playing? i mean, if it's 90%+ and you can make do with an average blues tone, then by all means go for the super high output pickups...

but if you aren't playing a fair percentage of metal, then, IMO at least, it doesn't make sense to go for super-hot pickups, since your other tones will suffer...

i'm not sure, to be honest. we've got heavier material and less-heavy material.

of course, i've still got the Epiphone with the Mule and 'Dog in it for those times when i need less menacing tones...

^ah, see it'd have helped if I'd read all your original post, lol.

Probably go with metal pickups, then.
