Right pickup for Schecter/PRS
« on: September 18, 2020, 01:50:07 PM »
Hey guys,

I want to put Bare Knuckle pickups in both of my guitars and I would like to hear your opinion on which pickups are the right ones for me.

My guitars:
Schecter Hellraiser C1: body mahagony, neck mahagony, fretboard ebony, 24.75, now: EMGs
For this one, I would like to change both pickups, so i need a bridge and neck combination.

PRS SC245: body mahagony, neck mahagony, fretboard rosewood, 24.5, now: Seymour Duncan SH-11 (bridge), PRS 58/15 (neck)
I want to put the SH-11 in the neck, because in my opinion it sounds to warm as a bridge pickup, but to good to not use it. So I only need a bridge pickup for my PRS.

Amps:
I use a Kemper for playing at home and live and an Engl Screamer 50 for playing in bandpractice. I use Engl profiles for my Kemper, so it would be good if the pickup is compatible with Engl amps.

Playing style:
My main genre is metal (my band plays metal, it’s kind of a mix heavy, thrash and modern metal), so both guitars should be able to do that.
As for the Schecter, this kind of sound is enough. My PRS on the other hand should be able to bring good jazz/fusion/blues tones and good cleans, too.

I want the pickups to have clarity (not muddy sounding!) tight low end and enough mids, but the mids have to be aggressive and not loose. The highs shouldn’t be to harsh but should be present and rich sounding. (Hope you know what i mean.)

Hopefully that’s enough information for you to help me with my decision.

So you want the PRS to modern metal, thrash, blues, fusion, jazz and good cleans?

Thrash would be the Nailbomb, blues with solid mids could be the Abraxas. Not really a single pup can do all that.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

Yeah, of course. My discription was a bit unlucky, sorry for that. What i meant: It would be nice, if the PU for the PRS would still be a metal PU but a bit more versaitle. It doesn't have to do everything perfect.

Yes I would probably go for one of the following for the Schecter:

Painkiller
Ragnarok
Ceramic Black Hawk
BLACK HAWKS
IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN
TRUE GRIT

Thanks for your recommends!
Yeah, it says in the discribtion, that the painkiller has aggressive high mids and tight low end, so i guess that would meet my requirements quite well. I like the sound examples, too.
What do you guys think of the Brute Force? It seems to be an interesting pickup.

The painkiller is the middiest BKP I've tried. Way more mids than the Holy Diver
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

Results with the Painkiller can vary, but with a guitar that does well with an EMG 81 like a Hellraiser you are generally pretty safe.

The Ragnarok and Black Hawk are probably a bit more versatile though.
