Rebel Yell for me?
« on: November 25, 2020, 06:05:22 PM »
I've pondered RYs for bridge in a few of my guitars over the last few years, but ended up with others in the end for my HB guitars: A-bombs (one covered, one not), a Holy Diver and a Crawler). Still really curious to try one though.

What does the consensus reckon to a RY bridge in a maple body/basswood neck Parker Nitefly?

I'm after something that's dynamic and fat, with a bit of a raw rock edge, for lots of stoner/prog/Clutch/Tool kinda end of metal/rock. The music has a lot of lower gain bluesy bits and spangly funk bits, but I'm more likely to be on a neck SC for some of that, so may not be a big deal breaker. Or sell me on another one.

Generally playing through a Diezel Hagen so I don't need particularly high output as I have spare gain available, but obvs just after a nice crunchy and raw, vintage tinged without being too weak, and not too hot and compressed.

I'm also curious of the Juggernaut and the VHII (and the Silo and all sorts of others I haven't played to some extent). I think my fave so far is the A-bomb, but they're all in different guitars so other variables at play, and always fun to try something else.

Really the Rebel Yell is an underwound Nailbomb, so its kinda similar.

I think both are lean in the low end and work best in a Les Paul style guitar.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
A-Bomb + Cold Sweat - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

That wood combination is quite odd and I doubt anyone can give advice without more info on the acoustic qualities of your guitar.

If the guitar doesn't have much inherent bass the RY could be problematic.

I have an Impulse - which is quite similar to a RY in many ways - and it doesn't like guitars with a thin bottom end.  Put it in anything with a lot of bottom-end meat to it though and its fantastic

My gut reaction is that the Rebel Yell isn't going to give you what you're after in that guitar, though the Hagen is certainly quite a thick sounding amp so there is a chance it'd work - it'd be a risk though.
However, I believe there is a perfect pickup for you in the range: the Abraxas. It's pretty close to a Rebel Yell wind but the AIV magnet takes a lot of the edge off and the low end is fatter. It's a "wetter" feeling pickup that I think would do a great job for the musical styles you mention. It plays nicely from the volume pot too, and if you have a treble bleed cap it's glorious for the blues/funk kind of thing.

Thanks for the replies. I'm now also pondering if I should go hotter. (and just made a new high vs low output pickups thread to see general opinion on how hot a pickup I should aim for in general and pros and cons of something like an Abraxas/Rebel Yell vs something like a Silo or Juggernaut)
