Amp issue with Marshall JTM60 - help?
« on: May 03, 2006, 12:32:47 PM »
I've just had my all tube Marshall JTM60 2x12 combo serviced and repaired, including a new output transformer, so it should be as good as new.

But I'm getting blown away in rehearsals by the other guitarist's cheap Marshall MG50 1x12 tranny amp  :?

Tube power is supposedly more powerful than tranny power for the same rating, so how come his amp has more oomph and cut than mine?  It's bloody annoying having your tube amp cranked to the max and having the rhythmn guitar player out-punch you during solos  :x

I was running it without the extension cab last night, so it was running at 16ohms.  When I get the new speakers fitted to my cab, it'll be running at 8ohms which I think should increase the power a bit but I doubt it'll be enough.

Do I give up and buy myself a different amp?  Are the JTM60 series known for being a "quiet" 60w?

Help please, it's driving me mad...

Worth trying different EQ's.

Also don't forget that speaker efficiency has a massive effect on perceived loudness-  a 50 Watt using 100db sensitivity speakers will sound as loud as a 100watt amp using 97db/watt sensitivity speakers.................

Yeah I've told him to turn down, but I've still got to compete with a kit at full tilt and the bass!

Those JTM60s are terribly-built amps, I hope the tech didn't use the same Drake OT to replace the blown one (?) as you're likely to have the same thing happen again.

I had this happen to a JTM60 I had and have heard of this problem with quite a few other people's JTM60s.  My amp was only running with the master on '5' when it blew the OT. I would cut your losses and get a new amp if funds allow.

Cheers mate - I was wondering whether to do that.

I've got a Laney Klipp head I bought as a backup for the JTM, but I think I'll use that as the main amp instead with the JTM as a backup...

You have a Laney Klipp and you've been using a JTM60 - has everyone gone crazy round here?

I have a treble booster that works serious wonders with the normal chanel on those amps, drop me an email/PM and you can have a lend.  You'll get some serious rock tones going on with the Klipp & this booster pedal of mine (heh).

Yeah, I got it for £220 locally and it's superb.  It's just having some repair work done as it melted a valve base at first rehearsal, but it's under a warranty so that's cool.  Should get it back on Saturday.

Hmm.  Maybe I should sell the JTM and get another head of some sort...

Well I know they get plugged plenty on here, but another person yelling "Matamp!!!" can't hurt can it?
