Holy Sh!t!!!

Live performance with his twin neck Dean... lots of over and under shred, updside down sweeps, and a few minutes of him harmonising with himself.. one hand playing each neck (finger strenght ++++)

Yeah, alot of it isnt that 'musical' and the such, but its DAMN impressive... 5 mins of non stop 2 hand legato runs???

Oh, and at the end he has a go at the riff from Crazy Train.. two handed style :P

It's all very clever but it leaves me so totally cold (jeez he makes Vai sound soulful).

Yeah I wish I had the technical ability, but nobodys gonna remember it or try to hum (or otherwise verbalise) it, they way every guitarist (and non guitarist) tries to with Hendrix, older Clapton stuff or even dare I say it earlier Van Halen stuff. It really makes me realise how much I miss going to see Rory Gallagher gigs :(

Hey it must be jazz Iv'e played lots of notes really fast but they mean nothing to me.

Nope not for me I'm afraid.

I listen to many fast players but guys like ma are just well and truely stuck in shred and dont impress me in the slightest. Its the players that can use scary technique for a purpose in the tune that are amazing.

Satch, Vai (cant believe some1 said ma makes vai look soufull.....Vai is a hugely emotional guitar player), Govan, Garsed, Balducci, Lane, Timmons etc etc Are all examples of guys way beyond shred.

I mean sure i would love such clean and comprehensive technique but the way it is used by ma doesnt do a thing for me i gota say and its the way that its used thats of the most importance.

HA, that's great  :D

As regards the original video, it's technically impressive yeah but it bored me rigid after a minute or so.

He must have some major compression on his guitar sound because everything he played, no matter how he was playing it (picked, legato etc) was always at the same volume level

Also, did his facial expressions remind anyone else of Nigel Tuffnel?

philistines, check out "2x again" a very melodic song which I always reccomend to uneducated angelo critics. Hes famous for the uber speed stuff and people write him off on seeing a small sample, guitarists are so judgemental and elitist.

Ive been played various ma stuff and sure some of it has melodic elements (and so it should do) but i feel no soul at all in any of it. Theres nothing elitist about it. Its just my opinion on his music.

Infact there are plenty of melodic ideas and some of them very interesting and good but its the execution of them that feels very cold to me. But again thats total opinion. If you feel its very emotional then thats cool but my view is it sounds very very robotic and thats not helped by the tone either.

If hes loving what he does and people are loving listening to it then great but my view on it to my taste is what ive said.

I said it, Vai does indeed have emotion (on occasions) but for a while he was very guilty of relying on technique over feeling (though he seems to be rectifying that these days)

To me soul means more than just emotion, but then I am currently in a chicago blues & Robert Johnston so perhaps I'm getting too much emotion in my diet at the minute.

I have to admit I loke Govans playing a lot (he sounds like a guitarist not a robot)

Yeh i would agree. Vai is the only guy i listed there who i feel overplays (or used to overplay) and go into the relms of being a shred guitar player. But at the same time the feel and soul he can have in his playing is up there with anyone.

Govan technique wise is just scary but thats not the thing that impresses me most. Hes just got so much feel and musical range, amazing player.

Soul means getting what you feel right into what you play imo....same thing as getting your emotions out and expressing yourself with the instrument. Its all very subjective tho.
