I remember him Johnny- didn't he used to busk the underground. His version of the Bay City Rollers "Shang a Lang" was something else.

That second clip was hilarious, truely inspired - I got much more entertainment out of it than the 'proper' MA clip.

Vai is something else completely, you can't just say he's shred - 'For The Love Of God' is hugely emotional, he's an example of a player who really does throw himself into his playing.

Passion & Warfare is the one album from that whole period that still stands up for me - Satch sounds pretty dated, though still amazing technique all the same.

I think satchs early cd's sound dated for the tone thats for sure but the music is amazing (well for the most part lol) when played live now. Love the stuff from the extremist onwards. Some of the best instrumental music ever imo.

I prefer the stuff Vai did with his triple-neck at G3 the other year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2EokjFIE5g&search=steve%20vai%20triple%20neck

Any seriously derogatory comments about players who could wipe the floor with most of us should be a little more carefully considered, gimmicks or not, to play to that level took some determination and commitment. (They probably got that way by playing instead of typing!)

No dout.......

I have no arguments at all with the amazing amount of work that has gone into that but from an artistic stand point i do not enjoy it or find it in the slightest inspiring. The fact someone can "whipe the floor" with me as you put it makes no difference as it weather i say if i like what they do or not as a musician.

Im interested in art....not gimmicks (and im sorry playing something over the neck that can be played just the same normal is a gimmick no question) and im not interested in guitar playing as a physical exercise or contest so there is no good or bad in many ways its all about your view on the music and i find ma to be very very unispiring and lacking in emotion.... And i say that as my point of view on what he does musicaly and that doesnt affect the fact i can see how much work he has put in and just how dedicated he must be (and i applaud that also).

Again thats not to say i can do any better but it is my opinion on what i hear.

I'm with stu_r regarding the subject.

Great coordination, speed, technique, control, but I have to ask the question why ? Does it lead anywhere apart from people going "Oooooh thats clever" If I want clever and interesting I will listen to Allan Holdsworth veering away from normality at very strange angles indeed.

If he had some listenable material that required that playing speed, two hands (and some feeling) I would be arsed, but so far enthusiasm is a no show in my case.

I guess I'm old and it's one of my faults.

im with don on this one all the way... and he didnt say we should all like that stuff... he just said we should consider any derogatory comments a bit more carefully...

even if i dont like the sound... just watching these amazing players do their stuff is fascinating for me... and i personally think its awesome.. ive heard a lot of comments about how non-musical all these guys are... and i think some people take it too far...

i can understand people saying they dont like the sound of the music... but calling it non-musical and basically slating it isnt on in my opinion...

oh and if its the passion/feeling people are debating, you only need to look into this Michael Angelos eyes and see that hes barely trying and it makes it look like he couldnt care less... but ive never been one to care for passions or feeling... if it sounds good, it sounds good... whether someone did an awesome shred solo whilst watchin TV or whether someone did a peaceful melodic number by putting all their heart into it... makes no difference to me

How did i miss your point??

He has great technique and i can have some respect for how much he has worked in that and i have considerd my comments very carefully indeed.

Whats more ive said many times that if you like it and find somthing in it you like thats great but to ME its cold and uninspireing....

Please explain your point if ive missed it.
