How Noisey are the Tele Pups?
« on: January 30, 2021, 11:58:24 PM »
I have a Fender player series telecaster. I really like the tone and gain from the bridge pup, it's more gainier than a Strat single coil.

But the buzz from it is horrific, way worse than the Strat.

I would not be surprised if the Cobra-T differs from the others in this respect, given that its design is quite unique.  From what I can tell all Tele pickups have some 60 cycle hum, and the more windings they have the worse they are.  But the differences in pole piece design etc in the Cobra-T probably changes that.  Other than the Cobra-T I would say that higher resistance numbers indicate more windings and most likely more hum.  I know my Stockholm P-90 can be pretty noisy, but it's all 60 cycle hum.

Guitar (soldering, shielding), chain (effects/amp), cables, location (TL-light) can all influence the amount of noise. Hard to tell what is the issue.

I played many loud gigs with a Fender USA American Series telecaster. First with a Suhr-T set and later the BG50 (which is now the BG52). I did not have issues which excessive hum, even with loads of gain. P90's in my Yamaha TVL 503 picked up way more hum.

Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I painted all the cavities in my SG Junior with conductive paint and even grounded that shield to the back of a pot, that helped some.  But a 15.9K P-90 is like an antenna, it's always going to be sensitive to its environment.

Tele pickups are not as big.

I would consider that it might have a faulty pickup, a bad ground, or inadequate shielding.  I would be surprised if BK single coils are noisier than stock ones.

Yeah, it's a fairly new guitar, the Player Series, so it's about 18 months old. I have a Fractal Axe lll, which I can use the noise gate on, but without that, it's pretty Noisey.

I'd prefer a tele pup thats close to the stock, as I like the tone from them, so I'd probably stay away from the Cobra.

I would try a Flat 50 set

I don't think the BKP sets will be any noisier than any other.  I think the problem is either a pickup fault in the guitar or some other wiring fault.

I would rewire it from scratch and apply shielding paint, grounding it with a wire to the back of the volume pot.

I haven't noticed what I'd call excess noise when it comes to BKP singles.  In my case, that would be The Boss in my Tele bridge, and a few different P90s.
