I posted a review of the Nantucket five years ago or so, thought about just updating that review but it is so cringy I had to make a new one... Fairly shortly after that review I moved away from P90s, because I'm a chronic buyer and seller and traded the guitar with the Nantuckets for something else I wanted. But last year I decided to revisit P90s, first a Gibson SG Special Custom Shop and then a Maybach Lester 59 but none of them sounded quite as good as I remembered P90s to sound like. Started thinking maybe the problem was the guitars, so I decided to give P90s one last chance by putting a HSP90 Supermassive in one of my Les Pauls I knew sounded great. To my surprise the Supermassive was also nothing like I expected, but in a completely different way. The SG and Lester were too bright and twangy, too single coil-esque but the Supermassive sounded absolutely nothing like a singlecoil.. It sounded like a hot humbucker, until the guitar volume was turned down and it revealed its identity.
After 2 minutes I emailed Ben and said that I have to return it, it was the completely wrong match for this guitar. In a Tele I imagine it would have been awesome, but not a massive mahogany guitar like this. So yesterday I got the Nantucket, and after the first chord I could tell it was miles better. After spending a good hour or so with it I realised that all the magic I remembered from my last Nantucket-encounter was here now too, actually even better than I remembered! Probably helps that I have a much better rig now, but still. This guitar has had a Riff Raff in it for the last 6 months or so which is obviously an amazing pickup too, but there is something about the Nantucket that is more unique and more to my liking. It's incredibly open and crunchy with a Plexi type amp, and turn down the tone knob to ~8 and it can handle all the gain you throw at it! I'll post a clip at the end to demonstrate just that. I used to think of it as a bad thing if you have to roll off the tone knob, but most people run treble and presence on the amp around 5 so why not have a little room for more treble on the guitar too - as long as it sounds good?
Although this clip is pretty short I think it speaks more than words, sounds pretty awesome to my ears at least!
