Anyone remember when I bought that '73 Celestion G12M from eBay? Well at the time, I transferred the money to cover it from my paypal account to my bank around the time that I paid for it with paypal.

HSBC tried to take the money out for the purchase about a week before they'd accepted the money for it from paypal, making me go overdrawn. I think it's pretty common knowledge now that banks actually get this money instantly, and sit on it for a week to gain interest on it.

Anyway, they charged me £30 for "administration fees", aka a computer automatically sending out a letter telling me the money wasn't in my bank account when they tried to deduct it. Even though they refused the transaction. Absolutely appauled by this, I sent my bank a letter describing the issue and citing legal precedents and rulings in which banks are not allowed to issue financial penalties for this issue.

To cut a long story short, here's what I've just found in my online banking account:

05 MAY     CR      REFUND OF CHARGES     Paid in > 30.00

 8)

Banks DO NOT want this to go to court, which is why threatening them made it so easy for me to get the money back; banks are breaking the law by doing this.

Have a read of sites like that if you guys have faced similar problems.

If you want to wind your bank up even more, ask them about their involvement in slave-trading during the 18th century.    :D

When a bank screws up (or is just being a complete arse) remember that you are entitled to charge them an 'admin fee' for every letter, or phonecall you have to make to them.

A mate of mine did this and for some reason dosn't get as many charges applied to his account these days :)
