Whoops! Bought a Sonic Maximizer
« on: May 08, 2006, 02:11:17 PM »
I appear to have accidently bought a BBE Sonic Maximizer off eBay for £57.50.

Looks like I'll need that new rack case sooner rather than later.

Ha ha, good to see it happens to others. I accidentally bought something off ebay. I was not intending to bid but did in error and ended up buying a nano verb for £25.00. How we laughed.

^ ah, cool. How much does the pedal version go for new, anyone? Ditto the rackmount one.

Let us know what you think of it when you get it, muttley!

I believe the rack mount version (362) is about £100 new.

That's what I gather.  I know Feline Jonathan has one in his rack and loves it.  I just thought that if I could grab a 2nd hand one for about £50 it'd be worth trying just for the hell of it.

I have no idea until I plug it in.  :D

Arrived this morning, but I probably won't get a chance to play with it until Thursday.

I have a BBE362NR looking for a home - I should stick it in Seconds out
Want about £60 for it.
The maximiser works well but there is something up with the noise gate - doesnt work for some reason

Had it running in the FX loop of my JCM800 and it did instant Zakk Wylde
IE- loads more crunch and harmonics flying out.

Stopped using it when I swapped it for one of my BBE 462s which wasn't needed in a rack anymore ( I now just have one rack system- even though it is a bit OTT with 6 different preamps etc)
www.felineguitars.com - repairs & custom built
Great fretwork!

This arrived on Tuesday, but I've only had time to quickly throw it in the new rack case this lunchtime and have a quick play.  It's really a quite remarkable little box from initial tests.

My current setup actually has quite a lot of clarity on it's own (or so I thought), being a Marshall JMP1 into a Marshall 9100 power-amp and then into a 1960A 4x12 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s.  With the Sonic Maximizer stuck between the JMP1 and 9100, and playing with the controls seems to remove an additional layer of mud I didn't even realise was there (if you see what I mean).  The Lo Contour control seems to give your guitar an extra thump (especially when doing Palm-muted chugging) but it doesn't muddy things at all.  The Process control opens up the top end quite a bit and can give a bit of sizzle on higher settings.  I think this is where the much reported "turning it on is like removing a heavy blanket from your speaker cab" comes from, and it does sound just like that.  :)

It's still early days though, and this is only a quick impression from 10mins playing at polite levels.  I'll report back how it handles itself at rehearsal levels in a week or so.

EDIT: Post topic changed so it's more obvious what this is about...
