Polymath vs Rebel Yell?
« on: February 23, 2022, 01:40:50 AM »
Hi! Has anyone compared the two? How do they differ? I’d like to get one for my PRS McCarty 594. I play classic rock, alternative rock, and some metal.

Hi. I switched from RY to Polymath in my prs custom 22. I find the rebel yell to be a bit brighter with more focus in the high mids, while the polymath is thicker and more balanced.  I actually find them to be quite close, as in I don’t have to drastically tweak my kemper preset when switching from RY to polymath.
They are equally as tight in the lows, but the thicker voicing of the polymath made metal riffs sound more punchy and brutal. It works much better than RY for drop tunings.
Both pickup can do crunch/medium gain tone really well, but I find the rebel yell better able to nail some 80s rock tone (mr big, white lion, etc.) to the T. The polymath can also do these sound, but with the RY it almost feel like I’m in the mix with the band when I play along their songs. Do keep in mind though I’m just a hobby player, so perhaps my experience with testing pickups is kinda limited compared to someone who play live/record.

Thanks man! I ordered a Black Dog bridge and a Polymath bridge. I’m really looking for more vintage/classic tones but can also do modern music. I’m going to try the Black Dog first and if it doesn’t have enough umph for me I’ll pop the Polymath in there.
