Metal pickup guidance
« on: September 26, 2022, 05:18:50 PM »
Hey, Guys! Looking for some guidance on metal pickups from the Bare Knuckle line-up. Originally, I had been thinking Painkillers, then got into Aftermath. Now I’m torn between Aftermath, Nailbomb Alnico, and the ceramic Warpig. Pups are going into an all mahogany (no maple cap) Les Paul Custom (set-neck, hardtail bridge). Goal is an aggressive high-output pickup that also shines in lower-gain settings. What would you say is the most versatile BKP metal pup? Also, what metal pup especially shines in Les Pauls? I appreciate your input. I’m especially interested in comparisons/contrasts among the pickups I’ve mentioned. Thanks, guys! This will be my first Bare Knuckle pup set. They’ll be replacing a Duncan Pearly Gates neck and Duncan Custom bridge. I like those pickups, but am wanting to refresh the guitar. Thanks, all!

Les Pauls can vary quite a bit; what's yours like acoustically? I've had 2 Customs - one was scooped and bassy and just did not want to be aggressive, and my current one is rich and vibrant in the mids but not the bassiest, so it's got Cold Sweats atm but I'm keeping an eye out for some Nailbombs. So my goal there is to let the Nailbombs help add a bit of low end oomph while still emphasising the midrange aggression this guitar naturally has, and also keep a bit of old school edge to my metal sounds.

So yeah, what's yours like? Does it have characteristics you want to emphasise, or ones you might need to work around?
