I have used a RY for many years in all kinds of guitars. Looking for a slightly softer pickups to go on a PRS S2, I tried both an Abraxas set and a True Grit set.
The Abraxas is a genius of a pickups. Still that vintage "yeahhhh" feeling but more basses, super smooth and vocal top end that sings on bends and high notes, and the more saturation the more chunkiness. It does have some muscles. The neck pickup is a bit on the loose end with a lot of distortion but has a damn pristine clean jazzy sound. Really sweet PAF. I used to own (for 1 month) a black dog on a different guitar and the Abraxas has definitively more power but sounds juicier. The Blackdog had strong basses and mids but was very proper, straight, and didn't match that need of dirt that I always have when it comes to pickups.
I'm rocking the True Grit at the moment to really make an educated decision when it will come to picking what set will stay in the PRS. It's a bit more powerful but the main difference is the compression. Not a lot of basses but they are chunky, so they don't track fast like modern metal pickups. Thick leads but thinner than the Abraxas for sure. It's also very sensitive to the amount of mid you dial up in your sound. The neck is very clear, fun to use. The grain is also a bit tighter, less hairy. Very particular humbucker that demands to play very differently that what I'm used. So judgment pending. Might need to go on a guitar that is not full mahogany, when this is the perfect wood setup for the Abraxas and the RY, in my opinion.
In terms of music feeling, Abraxas is Opeth, from Blackwater park to the latest albums, and the True Grit is Nolly when he plays his PRSs.
