Connecting a Mac to a wireless PC network

Ive done a few searches but cant seem to find anything.

I just got my Mac recently, still very new to it. I find the network is there, but when i try to connect is says it isnt able to. I have tried to connect at my home and work network. Am I doing something wrong?

don't know much about the mac side, but do the networks you are connecting to use any encryption or authentication, WEP, TKIP or the like.

that could be a possible issue.

Well the problem at work has seemed to resolve it self. But if i try to sign on to my wireless network at home it doesnt work. I know the password. It is a 13 letter password with WEP 128bit encoding. I put the closet thing i can find on the apple but nothing seems to work. It says, unable to connect to the network etc. Its fairly annoying. Any help would be great.

Have You just set up your wireless net at home? If it's new,  reset it, and prove it without encryption-just get it online-Once that's going on, add your security encryption, and all should be well.
if you can't, make sure all your incoming cables are in the right place-...not just where they fit, but the proper ones ( sounds simple, but check again)-Airport Extreme base stations have multiple sockets, and you may have the ethernet plug in the wrong spot.
This could be it...
after initially setting it up, you may have to log out, & in again-restart, & start from zero-reset the base station, andwalk all the way through airport setup assistant

Is it an existing network you have proven to work with windows machines, or anything else? Are you sure it's working?

Have you been in both Utilities 1.Airport Administration Utility & 2.Airport Setup Utility?

Check that if you have MAC address filtering on, you add you computers one to the list to allow you to connect.

For the record, I'm pretty sure there's not really such a thing as a "Mac wireless network" or "PC wireless network".  Whether the hub is a Apple Airport base station or something else, they're all using the same 802.11b protocol.  So, though I'm not sure what's causing the problem you're seeing, I think it should be one only of configuration, not some deep operating-system-divide weirdness!  I've always been able to get my iBook playing happily on loads of wireless networks (well, unless, I didn't know the password! :)).

i can connect fine on my ibook to my PC's Linksys network...

i did have some trouble recently though when my uncle sorted out our internet and set up a new name and password for it...

you said you found 'the cloest thing to it' or something to the WEP password was it?.... i remember finding a box where you choose the type of network security it is... so ill check out my ibook now and get back to you...  dunno if it will help though...

also, it may be different set-up for me as im on an ibook with built in Airport... dunno if theres a big difference between the stations for the desktops and the in-built stuff though...

Hey guys thanks for the help.

I also have an inbuilt  airport as well. My laptop recognizes that the network is there but when i put in the password which i know is correct with all the different available optiosn ( WEP, and all the rest, i cant remember the names ) is says you have typed an incorrect password.

My ISP is AOL, and the router is a speed touch. As I have said, I can now connect to my network at work. The problem at home is if i want to connect i have to connect my laptop to the ethernet port of the router which is just annoying.

Ill try what you said Drac if i get some spare time to have ago at setting it up again.

weird.... im gonna go on my laptop in a sec... hunt around...

the other thing it COULD be.... is the name of the network...

sometimes theyre not what they seem... i know when my computer got sorted out that i tried to find the network name, thought i had it, complained to my dad it wasnt working, then he told me i was using the wrong network name....

Hey-You may need to be added by an administrator profile-approved, etc., depending on the level of security your base station is set for.

Our network is called the NAGLE NETWORK. Its my surname, ill try connecting to one of the other networks using my own password?

when you say other networks... what do you mean?....

also, im not suggesting your an idiot or anything... but try it with/without spaces/capital letters and everything lol....

Well my computer sees that there is more then one network. When i get home ill carry on trying to connect to it. Its starting to really annoy me. Damn bar-stewards!
