Author Topic: Newbie Question - Bluesy Pickup for a Peavey Wolfgang (Read 4859 times)

Greetings - I've just joined this forum having been considering replacing the neck humbucker (and possibly the bridge too) in my Peavey Wolfgang for sometime - great site BTW.

I'd be really grateful for advice anyone could offer - I want to get that sweet, warm bluesy single-coil vibe from my neck pickup and was wondering if the VHII in single coil mode would do the trick ? If not, do you have any other suggestions?

Well, if you want more of a true single coil tone, then perhaps a Mississippi Queen is the pickup for you, since it is an actual single coil pickup in a humbucker size.

Other than that, I've heard people say good things about their split VH!!s.

the axis (which is practicaly the same) i played at the london guitar show was fitted with rebel yells and it was stellar!!! realy awesome tone

I fell in love with that guitar - it was king! Sounded amazing. I know what i'd put in my wolfgang!

For bluesy/rock tones i would say Mule. And its great on a floyd rose guitar,very warm!Mmmm!

Many thanks for the response guys. It looks like I should choose from the following:
1) VH II
2) Rebel Yell
3) Mississippi Queen (not sure if you can get this in the Zebra design)
4) Mule

To help make my mind up, I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the clean single coil sound of these PUPS?

i love the sound of my VHII when it's used for cleans in the neck of my ash strat, probably one of the best clean tones i've ever heard.

MQ is a P-90 single coil with cover to fit a HB mount. You have to have the cover. That said, BK have a lot of choices of covers.

I would put an MQ in the neck and perhaps the Rebel Yell in the bridge, or even another MQ. The MQ is a powerfull pickup (I have one with a Warpig in the bridge and it holds its own against that), it is great for the old Mountain, early Black Sabbath, Who and Santana tones. They were all P-90 users initially.

Thanks for all of the help. I've now decided to go for the VHII in the neck but can't make that final choice on the bridge (it's between the VHII and the new Rebel Yell).

Does anyone know if I will be able to get both a modern distorted sound and a decent clean sound (in single coil mode) from either or both of these PUPS ? From what I have read, the VHII should easily get a decent clean sound but the RY might be better suited to the heavier sound ?

Choices, choices ......

The VHII has a bit more cut and treble, but is a bit more "clean" because it has less mids. The RY would a bit thicker, fatter and sweeter. More cut for the VHII, more round tone for the RY. Both have very very decent clean tone for a bridge humbucker.

Thanks again for all of the help. I've decided to go for a VHII in the neck and a Rebel Yell in the Bridge - I spoke with Tim and he thinks Steve Stevens uses this combo in some of his guitars - so if it's good enough for the Mr Top Gun then it's good enough for me.

I'll let you know how I get on in due course.
