Need recommendations for specific voicing
« on: February 02, 2023, 04:19:32 PM »
Hey everyone,
I’ve been searching for a while for a specific pickup voicing. I play high-gain progressive metal (Silent Planet, Issues, Periphery) and am looking for a bridge pickup with chord clarity under high-gain, extra tight and percussive low end, and vocal high-mids and highs. I would really like to hear a pleasant “bwah” sound when I hit a chord under distortion, like this:

I’ve thought about the Cold Sweat, Aftermath, Painkiller, and the Juggernaut, but don’t want an overbearing low end or a ton of low-mids.
Thanks in advance!

the painkiller and the aftermath are very mid oriented and have quite tight low end
that aftermath actually lacks a little more low end in the lowest strings for my taste, but sounds more articulate and open in comparison to the painkiller
the painkiller sounds more dominant and compressed and the notes get that extra sustain instead of the dry noise gate-like response of the aftermath

something alnico, more versatile and a little less hot like the Rebel Yell will also deliver, since it also has a huge mid push and quite tight response for an alnico 5 pickup
they all have a very tube screamer like mid-pushy voicing
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks dude! I appreciate the info.
I've generally heard that the Aftermath is more open, so I think that would be a good choice for me.

I don't have experience with any of the pickups your thinking about here, but from your description, I think the Polymath should be on your list as well...   Let us know how it goes.

Okay cool. I've heard a lot of good things about the Polymath, so I wouldn't be surprised if it met my needs! I'll definitely update the thread.
