What's the guitar like acoustically? My first thought for an improved 498T is generally a True Grit, but you've ruled that out.
So you want less bright and more characterful mids... I'd say look at the Nailbomb in the first instance, then either the Silo or the Holydiver.
You mention not liking the hairiness in the Rebel Yell, and that is still there to an extent in the Nailbomb, but the midrange is much more in the centre and the lows, it's growlier. But, being 43awg, it keep some of that hot-PAF character and versatility that you find in the 498T/Rebel Yell/True Grit.
The Holydiver and Silo are both 44awg, so more modern feeling. The Holydiver's a bit more open, more balanced but with thick mids and a singing lead tone - no mush at all. The Silo is more compressed, with more weight in the low mids and tighter bass, and again, masses of clarity.
The more I type, the more I'm thinking you want a Silo.
