SD 'JB? Better than BKP?
« on: May 12, 2006, 05:11:08 AM »
Just joking.

I have a SD JB in the bridge of my Schecter and I like it. A LOT. It's nice and raucus. I'm thinking of switching the JB into my LP copy for a road test. Obviously if the JB sounds as good in the LP I'd want to put the BKP quality in to match the Mule neck.

Can you blokes advise which is the closest BKP to that JB sound?

Should do hot blues to heavy metal.

The new Holydiver, DC16.2K Alnico V-it'll eat your JB for breakfast  -seriously though I've worked hard to remove the mid honk that plagues the JB, open out the high end a touch and produce a more harmonically rich mid-similar amount of power though.

I've got a JB in one of my lp's and a set of mules in another.
In a side by side test, there does not appear to be much difference in the output of the two!

Now this could be because the JB is from the early 80's and is getting a bit old, but I prefer the tone of the Mule to the JB.

but saying that, my VHII has just arrived at home and that is going to replace the JB. (I fancied trying a different flavour)

Anyway I think the Mule is a fantastic all rounder that pisses on the JB.

dave, what the hell are you talking about?!

I played the Holy Diver set @ LGS and found nothing wrong with the upper freqs. I also have a 'borrowed' HB from PhilKing that's in my M1 for testing; same thing. If anything, it's darker than the Rebel Yell, Nailbomb, and Miracle Man.

Now,  the cheapass ceramic pup that's in my Agile, which is probably made in South Yemen ... THAT'S a glaring pickup!!

AH yes ... could be!

If so, mea culpa!

I've heard a lot of people complain about the brittleness of the JB, which I've never heard ... to me, it's just a muddy, flatulent mess.

... of course, I should've known better, since I don't think mc's heard any BKs in the flesh! (which makes the question kinda moot ... okay, talking in circles. I'll go away now)

Tim, you did not talk a lot about this new Holy Diver.
Can you talk about it a bit more? Comparison with the Rebell Yell, Nailbomb and similar pickups??
I think we are all very interested by it!!  :D

EDIT: sorry if I gave Tim a heart attack too, lol.

Thanks gentlemen.

Just in case any of you guys got the wrong idea, I don't have any preconceived ideas about any SD being better than a BKP.

I should have written a review after installing the Mules a few weeks ago. I do LOVE them very much. I just want a hotter pup for the bridge.

If I put the JB from my Schecter into the Tokai LP bridge and I like it then by God I'll be ordering a new bridge Holydiver............I have even already decided on it being Zebra.

Time to get the soldering iron out and thanks again.

Dave, last JB equipped guitar I tried I didn't like the sound. Like you say, very trebly and seriously microphonic. Do you think this is what they mean in the product description by "not at all dark"?
Surely the biggest problem with the JB is that you sound like EVERYONE else  :!:

As we've metioned the holydiver and comparisons between SD and BK sounds, I'm gonna hijack this thread and ask a couple of questions.
How well does the Holydiver do shred? I've got a Cort X custom superstrat that I use for technical work. It plays really well, but it's got an SD Invader at the bridge that is just TOO DAMN LOUD! Too make it clean up I have to really attack the volume control, and the intrinsic tone is a bit harsh anyway.
Also, it's got an SH2 Jazz in the neck. I really love the clean articulation of notes it gives, but I'd like a bit more muscle. Would the VHII be a good swap?
