Very sorry but,

How should you turn on and use a valvce maplifier? Ive neverused one before and heard that you can blow tubes if you do it wrong or sumthing?

Basically, what is the sequence of events

Make sure the volume is down all the way and the stand-by switch is on STAND-BY and turn on the amp. Wait 1 minute and take it off standby, then slowly turn up the amp.

And if it's a separate head with a cab, make sure you always have the cab plugged in before you fire up the amp.

I never knew you were meant to turn up the volume slowly aswell.. normally I just leave the standby switch on standby then turn on, leave for a few minutes or so, then flip up the standby switch..

yeah.

i mean, if it's on standby, the valves aren't getting any high voltage (as i understand it), just the heaters are getting warmed up- so it shouldn't really matter where the volume is...

that being said, when i turn mine on, i have my volume pretty low, just out of circumstance...

^ some amps may be different, but on mine, to have it on standby, I have the power on, and standby on (power switch in the up position, standby switch in the down position), and then to turn it fully on, I flick the standby switch to the up position.

but thats weird... standby on (for your amp) is down position... but power on... (for your amp) is up position... WTF?????

grrr bloody germans... and theyre excellent yet confusing engineering....

well on my Laney then... i could have been thinking ive been putting it on standby every time... but actually not putting it on standby every time....?

and does it make a difference to the sound if when you have the power on, standby is on too?

Yeah, when standby is on there is no sound. ;)

You should turn the amp on with it on standby and then, when it warms up a bit, flick the standby off.

You can turn it off with the standby on or off though; I don't think it makes any difference.

no Mark you spanner... i know when theres JUST standby theres no sound... but with standby AND power on.... does that make a difference? like you said there... "you should flick standby off"... why? is that important?

or wait... is that what it does on your amp... : when standby + power is on... theres no sound? hence the wink.... cause thats what should happen? if thats whats supposed to happen then im SERIOUSLY confused...

Uh-huh. Power + Standby = No Sound! N-o-o-o-o-o-o-o S-o-o-o-o-u-u-u-nd!!

So, to rephrase my other post, you should turn the amp on with the standby switch already on. The whole point is to have the amp power-up in standby mode. Then you disengage the standby function to get the amp to make noises when you play.

I wasn't offended, Sam. You're young and impetuous. :lol:

If you're getting sound with your Laney in standby then it might be broken. Unless that's how your amp works, but I've never heard of an amp that gave sound when in standby mode.
