I've got regular access to an ENGL Powerball, I've got an ENGL Screamer 50, JCM800 and Carlton Camel..

and unfortunatly i wouldnt say the Powerball was in the same league as something like say the XTC Classic, but it's a damn good amp for the money I dont think anything else in it's price range is as good.. and it's better than any of that Boogie cr@p..

ooh and Passion and Warfare was recorded on various marshalls, but mainly a JCM900 with a Boss SD1.. NOT A DS1 which he started using later.

Just about everything on Alien Love Secrets was recorded with an Ecstacy 101B.. but theres all sorts on there not just that amp..

And yes the 5150 is based on the SLO100 and believe it or not the Dual Recto isnt far away from the SLO100's design.. although sonically very different.

From what I gather Slodano's sound amazing, Vai used one to record 'Passion and Warfare' But that was an older Soldano SLO100. Personally I think you should go for the Mesa Boogie Dual ReCtiFieR cos it's the ultimate modern rock/metal amp, but it is agressive sounding! the SLO would be more smooth sounding. I cant afford a stack amp, dunno if I can even justify needing one???

Passion and Warfare was recorded almost exclusively on a 1971 Lee Jackson modded Marshall and maybe his backup, another Lee Jackson modded Marshall but it's a JCM 800.  If he used a Soldano on P&W, it was very sparingly.

Sex and Religion was a few different amps, probably the Lee Jackson modded Marshall but a lot of the Marshalls on that album were JCM 900s.  Alien Love Secrets and Fire Garden were recorded again with the Lee Jackson Marshall and some Mesas and Fenders thrown into the mix.

Fire Garden was my fav. Vai tone.  His tone was massive on that album.

Yeah you know your shite well...  however I disagree about Bogners being any better than an ENGL...

P&W was not yet on a JCM 900 though, it was recorded before they were out.  That was a Lee Jackson modded Marshall (I'm not sure which one though, but what most people don't know is his primary Lee Jackson modded Marshall was a 1971 handwired and the JCM 800 was his backup).

If you're still after a Soldano, my mate has a 50w head on ebay right now for £700 (bargain).  Hope this isn't considered spam  :?

I greatly dislike the 5150/6505s... lot of distortion but absolutely no balls at all, but other than that, they've been doing a lot of stuff right lately.

Curious, my 5150 has **great big balls** and not nearly enough distortion :)

Yet.

I've been lurking here and thought I'd bump this thread.

I've had my SLO since 1990 and it thrills me to this day.
Never a problem. Just bliss. I added the X99 preamp a few
years after that it's simple to use and sounds wonderful.

Just straight line it !

My Avenger.
Last of the EL34 Avengers, maybe even the last EL34 Soldano. So mike soldano tells me.
This thing does NOT lack balls. the resonance control is used a lot though. couldnt imagine this amp without one.
Its possible to get a 2 channel hot rod with a depth mod though i think if you need two channels.
i have an email from mike soldano about 2 channel soldano amp options from the hot rods to the SLO.
Decatone would be too much for me. ...

but with the SLO, you do get the lifetime transferable warranty. who else gives you that?

I love Soldano amps. The avenger is a personal favorite. Love the distortion. So does Gary Moore for that matter

I was sponsored on Peavey gear, played a 5150 for 12 years! Got to try out a lot of rigs, soldano, bogner, diezel, engl, mesa....
I preferred my 5150 over everything I tried until I played a Krank Revolution! I was completely blown away and had to buy one.
Been very happy with it for the past three years.
