good velcro for pedalboards?
« on: May 16, 2006, 12:09:10 PM »
I got a TKL pedalboard/case type thing today, bought off ebay. Really good quality (especially for £32) but the self adhesive velcro that comes with it is shite, and the "carpetty" bit where the pedals sit isnt that grippy by the looks of things. Whats some good, strong holding velcro type stuff that is around 2" wide if possible, the stuff this board came with is really thin, like 2cm wide ish, no good for pedals in my opinion! I read somewhere that 3M brand is good, found some on ebay but its a horrible colour

Cheers

I would recommend going to a sewing shop and see what they can get you. You'll pay way over the top for purpose designed stuff!

Yeah well I went to a shop before to get some and they only had this weak ass velcro like I have now.. Found some strong stuff on ebay but its like £18 a roll.. anyone got any scr@ps?

Edit - just found these things, after reading on HC about using bike chain links - http://www.nobels.com/cgi-bin/products/show.pl?e_mounty-p Great idea so I think I'm just gonna do that, I have loads of old bike chains so finding all the links shouldnt be a problem  :D

That's exactly what I plan on doing when I finally get my new pedalboard built :)

If you were to use Velcro, use a glue gun to stick the velcro to your pedals. They stick really well, but the velcro and glue can be peeled off if you ever wanna sell the pedal etc.
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

Dave, looks like interesting stuff - but 'Used to fix windscreens to golf cars' ? Do you have any problems getting your pedals off the board when you need to? I know that the point of the tape is to stop them being taken off, but surely there is a point when you might want to swap a pedal out, repair one or change the battery - is this a problem with the Dual Lock?

No, it's not too hard. Unless you completly cover the bottom of the pedal with dual lock. Then you'll need a pry bar to get it off!  I found that out the hard way with a MXR Flanger. Sucker would not come off the pedal board.

haha that sounds pretty strong! For now, I used bike chain links like the ones in the link I just showed, to screw down my psu, works really well and looks clean  8) The other pedals are actually holding ok with velcro, I put another strip on each.. Might do this chain link thing for the rest of the pedals when I've decided on a set I want to keep!

ah, they're cool Tom. I had a similar idea, but it was  a bit perverted with bolt-guns and stuff! I think Zakk Wylde does a similar thing, doesnt he?
Of course, not all pedals run off batteries, so they might not have the screws on the bottom though, will they?

Anyhow, I found some velcro, I don't know how strong it is but on the site it says its more than strong enough, after all, they are a pedal board company:

It depends a lot on the surface material of the pedal board how well the velcro sticks to it as well.

Mine have a formica type of surface that's glued on to the wood. Velcro sticks to the surface really good. If you clean it first with rubbing alcohol that also helps. Just don't drink any of it! :P

Cheers for that willo might get some of that till I've decided on a setup that I know I wont want to change around, then screw'er down with some bike chain links  :D Dont see why anyone would waste their money on those Nobels Mounties though when you can find an old bike chain almost anywhere
