Hi there,

I finally managed to order a calibrated set of BKP humbuckers for my Epiphone SG. It was a really tough decision, since there are so many great pickups out there. I went back and forth between several models, but Tim was really helpful and in the end I bought what he recommended to me since the first E-Mail.

Oh... I forgot to mention what pickups I actually got now. Do you really want to know this?

Well, have a guess! :P I will unravel the mystery in a few hours/days/weeks ;-)

I recorded a small and simple clip with a Beyerdynamic Opus 53 Condenser Mic and a very basic setup: it's my SG straight into an Orange Crush 30R. Unfortunately I had to record at a very low volume level, so the overall quality may not be as good.

I couldn't upload any MP3-Files to this section, so I put the file in the Players section.

I've gone for Abraxas.  It's very mid and bass heavy when clean, with not a lot of bite.  That rules out ceramics and Riff Raffs (I think).

Abraxas fits the bill of what you were after too.

Its hard not knowing the amp, and being at a low level.  I have gone with Riff-Raffs, knowing that mine in the LP can do the clarity, and there seems to be a bit more drive than I expect from a Stormy Monday on the crunchier bits.  However I was thinking that it would be a bit brighter sound based on mine in a LP, but I know that the SG makes the sound a bit more mellow.

I'm guessing Emeralds. The tone is very warm. Plenty of bass and mids and not bright.

At first I thought they could be black dogs, but they're not in the poll list.

However, I will record some more clips which are actually worth to be published. This sample was just recorded in a few minutes after I got the guitar back from the luthier. :P

That is something which always confuses me: I find the records  always much better (in this case: crunchier, in other cases: cleaner) than it sounds to me in reality. At first I thought it's the signal chain (mic/mixer/soundcard/cables) which adds a kind of "artificial distortion" (read: clipping :P ), but after I double-checked everything, I found it must be something else. For now, I think it's the really bad acoustics (a lot of reverberation thanks to sheetrock walls) in my room and the position of the amp on the floor standing right next to my feet. Both effects must be compensated when micing the amp...

They do sound like something hotter.  If you have a solid mahogany SG, that may explain something though.  But had Black Dog or VHII been on the poll, that would have got my vote!
