Maxon OD9 Vs. Behringer TO800
« on: May 23, 2006, 05:54:32 PM »
Basically... Here's the clips - i think they speak for themselves.

clean/bypassed,
50% gain+tone+level,
100% gain+tone and 50% level
Behringer: http://harridantheband.com/odtest/behringer1.mp3
Maxon: http://harridantheband.com/odtest/maxon1.mp3

50% gain+tone+level,
100% gain+tone and 50% level,
clean/bypassed
Behringer: http://harridantheband.com/odtest/behringer2.mp3
Maxon: http://harridantheband.com/odtest/maxon2.mp3

The quality is pretty shitety but clearly the £14 Behringer beats the £90 Maxon hands-down... Does this disturb anybody else? :?

P.S. Thanks for the clips Todge...
LOVING the Mules!

OD-9 and Tubescreamers sound best into an already cooking/overdriven amp rather than a completetly clean one...

Yeah, I was planning on using it as either a solo boost or on my amps semi clean so we'll see how it goes.

Are you serious??! Listen to the Behringer clip 1 at around 57 seconds, and then the Maxon clip 1 around the same time.. theres a huge difference! The Behringer sounds so much better!

Maxon has more midrange, which makes it great for solo boosts.

The Behringer has a clearer tone which gives a "better" general sound, but it won't be so hot as a solo boost I don't think.

Actually Twinfan I think the Behringer has more mid! The B. seems tighter and more focussed without much bass, where the Maxon is kinda flabby and more bassy. The B. actually sounds more like a typical tubescreamer to me!!
Totally subjective which one is better really, I've always preferred a looser sound so in that respect I prefer the Maxon. The B. does sound more refined though, the opposite of what you'd expect!

Maybe I'm just tired and missing something here, but the clean/bypassed clips sound so different that any comparison of effects is nearly useless.  I don't think that the Maxon would be introducing such a huge level of tone-suck just by being in the signal chain and turned off, because they're a true-bypass pedal. So the EQ settings must be different or something and that's why the tone is so disparate.

I agree....the two bypassed should sound identical, but they don't.......also, the maxon has much more bass, which can be handy in certain situations....

What amp is this going into, and how loud is it being played?

And I personally prefer the Maxon.....the behringer sounds more like a cheap distortion pedal.....very DS-1 esque.

They are both straight into the soundcard apparently. Heres the thread I found them in - http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1254006&highlight=maxon

The Maxon does sound fuller but its so muddy in that clip!

Well, to me also the Maxon sounds better, richer with more harmonics and a little more edge. The behringer sounds compressed to me ...

I thought the Maxon won on the first example - but given the Behringer  is about £22 and the Maxon £95 the Behringer performed well for the cash difference.

thats exactly what i said to tom!!! the sounds are SO different before the pedal is engaged that the same difference is carried over into the distorted tones...

glad someone else noticed this and its not just me
