Dream Theater type sound
« on: May 23, 2006, 06:19:20 PM »
Hi there,

I'm planning on building a guitar from scratch. The body is going to be mahogony. So, I was wondering which pickups I should get. I'm gonna go with Bareknuckle's, because i've heard excellent things about them.

The type of stuff I play is bands like Dream Theater, Muse, a bit of Trivium, Metallica, that sort of stuff. Kind of metal with a dark-ish tone.

So which pickups do you reckon I should go for to get these sounds? It's gonna be H-H configuration by the way.

Cheers!

(If you want more information, just ask, i'll be happy to provide it)

Sweet stuff, Muse are my favourite band, so Nailbombs should be good.

Can Nailbombs do decent enough cleans? They don't need to be brilliant, but good enough to get the job done.

sorry, no idea, never played them, but they'll sound amazing through a fuzz factory and phase 90 all the same

Nailbombs can do very good cleans from what I've heard of the sound clips. I would get the 4 conductor wire so you can split the HB's. I believe there is a coil split NB clip in this forum somewhere that sounded great.

I've got a Nailbomb in the bridge of my Srat and it's awesome for DT stuff. The cleans are very nice too. And it splits really well. Sounds almost exactly like a really good single coil pickup.

Nailbomb all the way, I say. There's a Dream Theater clip I did with the Nailbomb in the player's section here:

Hope this helps :).

That's a tricky one. I have a set of Holy Divers (which i haven't had time to install yet) but when i played on an RG with Holy Divers the bareknuckle guys had, it sounded like the kind of thing John Petrucci would use. Lots of clarity, not really high output but just enough to get a good metally sound but can also sound pretty cool with the volume rolled down.

petrucci's pickups.

He has a low output very woody hollow smooth sounding neck pickup and a very scooped mids highout put bridge pickup with a peak in the bass and mids.

i'll tell u now the Cold Sweat and Miracle Man combo absolutly NAILS this tone, i think u might find the Nailbomb neck pickup too thin for the petrucci sound although the NB bridge maybe a great choice.
