Which Pickups?
« on: May 29, 2006, 01:28:02 PM »
Hi, I have a Korean custom Fender tele and have been considering upgrading the pickups on it for some time. A mate of mine has a Les Paul with a Warpig in the bridge position and I really like the sound of that so for the bridge I'll probably go for the warpig or a P90 type (which I also like the sound of.

However, I am still vaguely undecided about whick neck pickup to choose. I am looking for a kind of Gary Moore/Dave Gilmour-esque tone. Very mellow and full that will allow me to add just a touch of gain without affecting the clarity of the note, hopefully with as much contrast to the warpig as possible.

If you have suggestions or comments about what pickups I should choose they would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

If you're going to use a humbucker sized pickup, I would say Missippi Queen. For a single coil, the Irish Tour will do what you're looking for.

Welcome!

For the bridge pickup (I'm assuming it has HB routing) Why not go for the best of both? There's a crossbreed between the P90 and the Warpig wich is called the Pig90. But I'm not sure you can get it in a HB size.

Sorry, I shoulda been more clear. I was refering to the NECK PICKUP only, with the assumption that you were going with a War Pig in the bridge.
That's what I get for typing PRIOR to having cawfee!!

If you want that mellow tone in a humbucker, I'd suggest a Stormy Monday pickup for the neck.  After all, you did say you wanted something that would contrast the sound of the Warpig as much as possible.

Heh, sorry. Should have made that more clear; both the pickup routings are for HBs.

If anyone has any opinions on the Pig90, Stormy Monday HB or the Mississipi Queen I'd be happy to hear them.

Also, would you consider the Mississipi Queen to be best used as a bridge or neck pickup?

I've played the Pig90 in PhilKing's Les Paul Jr and I loved it!
I THINK I've played two of his MQs and I loved em both, but I especially liked the MQ that was voiced to go in the neck with his bridge War Pig!!

Edit: The Stormy Monday has an amazing vintage tone. I think it would be great in the neck position. I wouldn't recommend it to someone that was looking for something like a War Pig. Not sure what you're looking for, now. I admit, I'm a bit confused. I thought you were going with the War Pig in the bridge! If you're not, then you should tell us what kind of sound you're going for.

I was just looking for two pickups that competely contrast each other. I heard my friend's warpig and figured that was one end of the spectrum so now I'm just trying to find the other.

I really love the tone of P90s so I'm torn between a warpig or the pig90 for the bridge pickup but it'll probably be one of the two.

However, for the neck pickup. I seem to have narrowed it down to either the MQ or the Stormy Monday and I'm just trying to decide between them. Basically I just want to know which one you think counterbalances (not sure if that's the right word) the warpig/pig90 the best.

They're apples and oranges, though. The War Pig is a humbucker and the Pig 90 is a single coil of sorts.

If you're looking for a Dave Gilmour / Gary Moore sound (they're completely different by the way) you've got the wrong guitar to start with!!

I'd say that an alnico II Stormy Monday will be more mellow than your stock MQ, if that helps.
