That I NEED (:twisted:) a JCM800 combo that I've found on ebay, for a great price, and is in a town close to me meaning I'd save on postage and could try it out first anyway..

I was speaking to him about it and he seems to think it'll be rubbish and unreliable, noisy and generally cr@p. There must be some way I can show that it wont be like this?!

Nope, otherwise maybe he'd understand about rarities such as JCM800 combos going for good prices! If only I had a job so I could pay for stuff myself :?

tell him the only thing that can go wrong is you turn the power on without a speaker cab connected and blow it.

1) he might be more keen to give you a loan and
2) try showing him a thread full of people asking your dad to get it.
They barely ever turn up Tom's Dad so go for it, he'll pay you back!

I have the JCM800 combo, Tom, and take it from me it isn't unreliable. I think there is a little bit of noise caused by a loose wire inside - I really should sort this out, but the in-built noise reduction facilities of the THD Hotplate kills this noise anyway.

So, yeah, I can whole-heartedly recommend it. The fact is, that whilst the amp is older than a brand-new amp, those Marshalls were quality, and that kind of quality lasts. It isn't going to just break down - if it did, would the JCM800's have featured in the backline of almost every rock guitarist of note in the last 20 years?

Slash, Frusciante, Zakk Wylde, Navarro, Metallica, Billy Corgan bla bla bla

If he still can't see what you mean, relate it to an anology he will be able to relate to - furniture, for instance. I mean, people desire Victorian furniture - partly for it's value, but also because of the construction qualities. I mean, these antique dressing tables are still being used today, they don't just fall apart like some modern-day tables would.

How can it be unreliable? Components in it would break only if the person using the amp mistreats it, and I doubt it'd need a cap change any time soon if the seller hasn't mentioned any problems. There's not much in a JCM800 that could go wrong, there's a lot less components on it's circuit board than the amp you're using right now.

He might be right about it being noisy though... :twisted:

Yeah I was trying to tell him about the quality of old amps... he started telling me I sounded like a grumpy old man saying that things arent the same as they used to be :lol: The only way to prove him wrong is to go play it I guess with him present, I just gotta find a way of this happening :P

I think the fact that someones actually selling it is a reason hes skeptical - "Well it cant be that good if someones wanting to sell it" :roll:

say to him: you bought this house off someone, they sold it for a reason, cant be that good etc etc

or attack his car in that way :P

or even your mum.. 'shes not always been married to you, so someone else must have passed her on' :lol: (ok VERY bad taste.. and not meant to offend matey!!)

works a charm as my dad always wanted to play piano (as did i) so he's particularly easy to push over in the spending dept.

When I wanted to buy a 1977 Marshall super lead I just told my dad that I could still make a profit by selling it on e-bay. The same line worked when I wanted to buy a 1981 JCM800.
My dad isn't really a musician but he trusts me about things like this because he knows I'm a total Marshall-geek... even though I'm only 16.

Oh, and by the way... I still have both amps :twisted:
