Here is how I got several jobs, and to do this you have to be damn sure you can pull it off.

"Look. I need a job, and you need some help I know. I'll work for you a day, and if you don't like my work, then you don't owe me, but I bet you I will out work most of your existing crew...today and everyday. Try me."

I have used that several times, and I started doing it at your age basically. I went from pee-on laborer to Carpenter Elite in just a few years, and now I can look at any boss/contractor and tell them that, "My truck doesn't start up for less than $12 an hour, and damn sure won't move unless I have that pay for a minimum of 40 hours a week.", and I get the pay and the work due to my references. (Remember what I said about them? Look at the previous post or two of mine.

) I bust ass and do my job, period.

Cop that attitude, back it up, and bust your ass, and NEVER forget to learn from anyone. It will be hard, and it won't be easy, but you can do it. I did.

I aquired my first decent fender by working forty hours a week packing bricks. There's always a job. Not necessarily a good job, or as in my case, a safe job (Daily sectarian death threats. I love Northern Ireland), but a way to earn some green. You'll find your ould fella much more easily swayed if you're pulling down any coin at all.

Actually, right about now, check out your local council. They all take on a load of casuals over the summer for landscaping, grass cutting etc. It's not glamourous, but the pay is pretty decent and you'll be working with a shower of lazy old buggers. Somedays, you'll be earning your wages drinking tea and reading the paper....

go into your local town\city

walk into a job center.

ask about agency vacancies.

choose 1 of 100s of jobs, all with transport to and from the place of work and starting on at least min wage.

Seriously, i used to work in a call center with a 17yr old girl, she was on £13k a year with an agency on 6month rolling contracts, and eventually she went full time, and is now 20 and earns about £15k + bonuses!

My 1st proper job was nightshift temping for Woolworths... £9.00 an hour.. i was 18 :P

Then i worked in a warehouse through an agency for £260 a week (40hrs)

Now i've been in a bank for almost 2 years fulltime.. decent money, promo ops, min 12% annual bonus, again a job agency got me the interview that started things off :)

AGENCY = teh win.

and the best thing is... if you go somewhere you hate, you can walk out. and they dont care... its in your contract that you can terminate your assignment without notice\reason at anytime (and they cant hold it against you..).. also means the agency can do that to you.. but unless you mess up\piss people off you'll be fine... unless its strictly temp work.. but they'll tell you that for sure.

You seem like a decent lad and not a dead head chav or something... just go for it.

Try agencies fo sho. Office work is a good way to earn a load of money doing simple stuff. Get to a job centre you vagrant!

I don't think Tom lacks work ethic- it is opportunities he needs. Trouble is, Bleed, we have regulations and I am not sure if you can work for nothing even if you want to- not officially anyway.Laws brought in to proptect the exploited can also compromise ingenuity. Agree with you guys about work generally and like the old saying goes, if it is worth doing it is worth doing well. I have been working 6 days a week for the last 18 months to help contribute to Gordon's budget.

Ok ok! I will go to Job Centre as soon as I can to see if they have any part time things, I thought they only advertised full time stuff there though.. what the hell is agency work though?

agency work...

companies call up an agency and say 'we need 10x people to do a job cos we are really busy'.. the agency looks at their client list, selects some peeps and sends them over.

saves time as all agency staff have been interviewed\vetted before hand.. and can be hired n fired as needed :)

They have that here too, but there is so much "under the table, and out the back" work that you can do it. I'd say if he keeps his nose clean that he could pull it off there. In my case I knew that an older carpenter would test my metal and I would at least have a chance to prove my salt. So I'd say that he could find an older, stuck in his way fella to try his hand with.

Now I do agree that there should be laws and the like that protect everyone for all reasons, so please don't take my stance here wrong. I am actually looking into getting my contractor's license again, and I know about the laws (at least here) and why they are into effect. So I agree because they protect me as well as you/the employee. So it is good all around.

Good point though, and he can now be aware of what is going on better. Always good to have a nice battleplan. Cheers.

It should be noted that Bainzy is a qualified tech and knows his stuff (so if _tom_'s dad sees this, he can know someone who knows that he's talking about said it's good!).

It should be noted, that my dad had a friend with an old Fender Twin Reverb from the 60s and he hardly ever plays electric. So when I was hunting for my first tube amp, he immediately called him up and asked if he wanted to sell it at the going rate but he didn't have it.

If it helps, I have a '69 Marshall Major. One of the 200 watt Marshalls that's notorious for eating tubes for breakfast. It's generally been very solid and took me 5 years to melt a tube on me.

When I bought my first amp, my first amp that I actually had to pa for, I worked for a year straight at a local supermarket and banked half of my paycheck each week. I happen to be at a musicians flea market, and there happens to be a Marshall Major and 2 JCM 800 cabinets, and I happen to have had enough money to buy it. I've slaved for minimum wage but I managed to earn $about $8000 for all my guitars and amps (my parents did buy me a good portion of my first tube amp, a used Vox AC30).

My suggestion? You can look at convienent stores, grocery stores, hotels, (they always need people!), restaurants, or if you have a specific skill, make a resume and go to every business in the area and start handing it out to them.
