Black Box WTF!
« on: June 04, 2006, 05:46:23 PM »
OK, am seriously stressed (folks and all) and tired, so what am I missing.

M-Audio Black Box bought last week in USA worked GREAT.

Brought it over to use and yesterday managed to get a mutli voltage power supply from a music store. Black Box only says 9volts 1000mA. Got a 1000mA variable voltage supply (2-12 volts). Set it on 9volts, lights up etc. but NO output/sound. crank volts to 12v and very quiet/muffled sound.
What am I missing? WTF? All I need, one stress relief is not working, damn am depressed!

Those variable voltage jobbies (I take it it's a wee wall wart) are notoriously poor power supplies. They never deliver the full poke quoted on the label, except at maximim voltage across a short. shitety volt regs in them. Best to get one at least twice the rated power.

Hmm,this was from a music store, but still, might be right.
So as I get a muffled mess at 12volts and nought at 9volts ya think the reg. may be suspect? Maybe indeed.
Need to find a multimeter I guess.

I've had trouble with that kinda thing, too.  I took an old Digitech RP7 from it's natural 240V habitat to a 120V one and even with an adaptor it didn't work.  I took an amp and a few other things back the other way and had to buy a step-down transformer, which cost over $100 and weighed a ton.

Might be best off going to an electronics store like Radio Shack.

I had a similar prob, when i got my mesa dual rec from america, sadly no longer have it, i had to buy an industrial type converter, the simple small wall socket type things just dont convert the power properly, look online for step down converters, you can get ones for about £50-150.

Maplins do some good step down transformers, so do Radio Spares.  I put a powerful one in a box with an American distribution strip wired into it.   One quick thing to check is the power req.  The M-Box needs 9V  AC, I think your high street supply will be DC.

You need an AC supply - again go to Maplin.  Don't keep trying the DC supply - it might damage the Black Box.
