TWILIGHT DRIVE ... On Its Way! (Long Post)
« on: June 10, 2006, 03:45:23 PM »
After approximately six months of correspondence with Joel (Weaver, brainchild of Homebrew Electronics), our first collaborative effort  (dubbed the Twilight Drive) is on its way to me!

The Twilight Drive is not designed to replace any of my HBE pedals; instead, its purpose is to provide nearly one-stop shopping when it comes to tonal options, and to be a Swiss Army knife for live use and rehearsals. (Also a form of live use, if you think about it)

Those of you that know me (the ones I chat to online via IM or perhaps PM, and there are a lot of you; or, if you're unfortunate enough to live within my beer drinking radius) also know that pedal boards don't hold much truck with me; in fact, I hate bringing pedals to gigs. They're small, expensive, and tend to get lost. (Why not get a pedal board, I hear some of you asking ... the answer is I just don't like em!)

My solution to this problem was to work with Joel on a pedal that would combine the functions I need the most when I step into the studio or stage into one box. Each effect would have to be discrete, so that I can chain em together or use them seperately. That's when the Twilight Drive was born.

The Twilight Drive combines the following effects into one chasis:

1. Power Screamer overdrive
2. Uno Mos preamp/clean boost
3. Active buffer stage from the Dos Mos preamp/boost

It also has the same transformer-isolated input stage that can be found on the new line of Bytch'n Swytch'n pedals.

Don't expect this pedal to become part of Joel's regular roster, simply due to the expense of having so much stuff inside one chasis. Still, it was a fun project to work on, and I'm looking forward to the final result!

I now have two other pedal ideas that I'm going to have made, both of which address needs I see that are not covered by other pedals. One will be called the Black Flag Omni Boost (or similar) and will enable a guitarist with a single-channel amp to go from clean to distortion without having to touch the volume control on his guitar. (I hate control pots and try to eliminate them wherever possible) The other pedal is still in it's zygote stage, and I'll let you all know about it when it's ready.

you haven't seen some of my posts if you think that's long, Ben...

but anyway, that's pretty cool. So do HBE take custom orders from regular people (like me) or is it kind of a signature pedal? I know (from reading magazine reviews etc.) that they have custom options (many no cost) and paintjobs, etc....

:drink:

I'm pretty sure that Joel will do cusotm builds, if he has the time (I think it's a 12+ week wait at the moment), and if you have enough cash!!

sounds good actually!

The clean \ dirty thing sounds interesting, how will it work without delving into the wiring of the amp? I guess on some amps you do get seperate pedal inputs to control channels\gain etc etc so you dont need a 1 huge pedal board..

id like a boost \ delay pedal that has separate outs to route a delay into the effects loop... would be great but probably cost ££££.

Kinda like an MXR Micro Amp, a Mid boost EQ and a Boss Delay all in one ;)

hmm.. *checks credit card balance*

It will have to be a valve amp.

Well, the Twilight Drive just walked through the door (no thanx to FedEx, and the extra 4 day wait).

The pedal is HEAVY and is built just like my other HBEs ... that is, like a tank.

It's painted an awesome matte black with white lettering an knobs.

I'll post pics later!!

Update: The pedal arrived on Tuesday, and I got to use it for the first time at rehearsal last night. First, I was pleasantly suprised to see silk screening on there! The pedal looks great in  matte black!! I played it last night using my '79 Strat (hardtail, Bare Knuckle VHII pickup in the bridge) and a Diezel VH-4 half stack.

All I can say is WHOA -- it sounds GODLY!! I set the amp for a mild, saturated crunch. When I added overdrive, the sound didn't really get thicker or noisier. It just got nastier, with killer bite and TONNES of harmonics! I was able to get the most awesome pinch harmonics anywhere on the neck! When I added the boost, which I'm now calling the Attitude Adjustment, it got even meaner. The tone got a sick growl and even more harmonics for lead work. I was even able to use it bring out subtle accents to certain riffs. It didn't necessarily get louder, but totally MEAN and EVIL!!

Pics and clips coming very soon!
