Just wired up some Sultans in HSS formation please help.
« on: June 10, 2006, 06:42:56 PM »
I have just installed 2 Sultans in my Yamaha Pacifica 112 (HSS config).

Each pickup sounds great on its own (all fairly even volume) and the 2 singles sound nice together but the Bridge Humbucker and Middle pickup together results in a huge drop in volume and very thin sound.

The Humbucker in there is an old SD 59 pickup with just 2 wires a black one (going to 5 way switch) and an outer sheath going to ground / earth. The sultan middle pickup is RWRP (I'm wondering if this was a mistake and is causing the problem).

Any ideas what might cause this?

I'm pretty sure the old middle pickup was rwrp and I'm pretty sure it's wired OK - but suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks

Phil

From the sounds of it, it sounds like 1 of the pickups is out of phase if the sound is very thin with a big volume loss.

Have you tried reversing the hot and ground wires of the SD humbucker?

The problem is that pickup manufacturers don't all have identical colours for their wiring, so it's hard to match them up sometimes.  The above advice is probably good.  Or you could rewire the two singles, though that's more work for basically the same end result.

Thanks, I'll re-wire the humbucker and report back.

Cheers

have just re-wired it. I decided to leave the humbucker as it was but swap the singles, I'll explain...

I think that having the outer shield of the HB as the +ve connection would provide too many chances for there to be a short circuit as that is exposed along the whole wire and could therefore touch any part grounded part (e.g volume knob) and go to ground.

So anyway, I rewired the 2 singles and it all works fine. I don't know why they were out of phase as the instructions with the singles says that the black are to go to ground and the white to the switch and the Seymour Duncan Website said the outer shield is ground... Which is what I did 1st time...

So now I have it wired up against the instructions but it works...!
